The Light We Cannot Approach
디모데전서 6장 16절 : 오직 그에게만 죽지 아니함이 있고 가까이 가지 못할 빛에 거하시고 어떤 사람도 보지 못하였고 또 볼 수 없는 이시니 그에게 존귀와 영원한 권능을 돌릴지어다 아멘
태양은 빛의 근원입니다. 우리는 그 빛을 통해 사물을 보고 온기를 느끼며 생명을 유지합니다. 그러나 태양의 중심에 직접 다가갈 수는 없습니다. 태양은 생명의 근원이지만 동시에 접근을 허락하지 않는 존재입니다. 인간은 그 빛을 통해 살아가지만 그 근원에는 닿을 수 없습니다.
하나님도 이와 같다고 생각합니다. 우리는 말씀과 역사, 자연과 사람을 통해 하나님의 속성을 배웁니다. 그러나 여전히 하나님 본체에 대한 온전한 이해는 인간의 인식으로 도달하기 어렵습니다. 우리는 하나님의 빛을 경험할 수 있지만 그 빛의 근원에는 접근할 수 없는 것입니다.
바울이 말한 "가까이 가지 못할 빛"이라는 표현은 이런 의미로 이해됩니다. 그는 하나님을 인간으로부터 멀리 떨어진 존재로 설명하려 한 것이 아니라 하나님과 피조물 사이에 존재하는 존재의 질서를 드러내려 한 것입니다.
하나님을 온전히 이해하는 것은 불가능하지만 그렇다고 하나님이 자신을 감추신 것은 아닙니다. 하나님은 인간이 감당할 수 있는 방식으로 자신을 계시하시며 언제나 우리 곁에 계십니다. 하나님은 멀리 계신 분이 아니라 다만 인간의 인식이 그 깊이를 다 헤아릴 수 없는 분입니다.
이 접근의 한계를 자각할 때 신앙은 자기 확신으로부터 벗어나 겸손해진다고 생각합니다. 하나님의 근원에 이를 수 없다는 사실은 좌절이 아니라 신앙의 조건이 됩니다. 우리는 그 한계를 통해 자신이 아는 지식의 불완전함을 인정하고 그 인정 속에서 신앙은 성숙해 나가는 것 같습니다.
하나님은 가까이 가지 못할 빛에 거하십니다. 그분의 존재는 접근 불가능함으로 오히려 확증됩니다. 빛의 근원을 볼 수 없지만 그 빛 아래에서 우리는 하나님을 압니다. 그 신비로운 역설 속에서 신앙은 이해가 아니라 경외로 완성됩니다. 빛의 근원을 소망하며 그 빛 아래서 하나님을 아는 지혜로 세상을 살아갈 수 있기를 기도합니다.
1 Timothy 6:16 : Who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
The sun is the source of light. Through it, we see the world, feel warmth, and sustain life. Yet, no one can approach the center of the sun. It is the origin of life, but it does not allow direct access. We live by its light but cannot reach its core.
I think God is like that. We learn about His nature through His Word, history, nature, and people. But even then, our understanding of God’s essence remains limited. We can experience the light of God, but the source of that light remains beyond human reach.
When Paul spoke of the "unapproachable light," he was not describing God as distant or detached. Rather, he was revealing the order that exists between the Creator and the created. It is not distance that separates us from God, but difference in being.
Though we cannot fully comprehend God, He has not hidden Himself. God reveals Himself in ways we can bear, and He is always near. He is not far away; it is simply that our perception cannot grasp the depth of His being.
When we become aware of this limit, faith becomes humble rather than self-assured. Realizing that we cannot reach the source of God is not defeat, it is the foundation of faith itself. In that awareness, we accept the imperfection of our knowledge, and within that acceptance, faith grows deeper and wiser.
God dwells in unapproachable light. His existence is affirmed by the very fact that we cannot fully approach it. We cannot see the source of the light, yet under its glow we know God. In this mysterious paradox, faith is fulfilled not through understanding but through reverence. May we live with the wisdom to seek the source of that light while walking faithfully beneath its radiance.
