The Circle of Time
요한계시록 22장 13절 : 나는 알파요 오메가요 처음과 마지막이요 시작과 마침이라.
요한계시록에서 하나님은 스스로를 알파요 오메가라고 세번을 반복해 말씀하십니다. 스스로 시작이며 끝이라고 말씀하십니다. 대립하는 이 두 단어는 하나님 안에서 모순없이 같이 섭니다. 이 역설을 받아들이는 것이 신앙이라고 생각합니다.
인간의 시간은 직선위에 있습니다. 시작이 있으면 끝이 있고 원인과 결과는 순차적으로 놓이게 됩니다. 그러나 하나님께서 말씀하신 "나는 알파요 오메가라" 하는 선언은 그 직선 위에 존재하지 않습니다. 하나님은 시간의 흐름에 속한 분이 아니라 시간의 흐름을 품고 계신 분이기 때문입니다. 요한계시록의 세계에서 끝은 소멸이 아니라 완성이며 시작은 창조를 품은 끝의 또 다른 이름이 됩니다.
이 신비한 말씀을 마주하게 되면 요한계시록은 더 이상의 멸망의 예언서일수 없습니다. 요한계시록은 파괴를 향하는 책이 아니라 시간과 공간의 주인이신 하나님께서 자신을 드러내는 계시가 됩니다. 우리의 시선에 그것이 종말처럼 보일지언정, 하나님의 시선으로 보면 그것은 회복의 문이 됩니다. 끝과 시작이 교차하는 그 지점에서 하나님은 스스로를 현재하신 분으로 드러내십니다.
아주 오랫동안 마음 속에서 잡힐듯 잡히지 않는 이 신비를 언어로 설명하려고 노력해봤지만 할 수 없었습니다. 그리고 어느 순간에 그럴 필요가 없을지도 모른다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 하나님은 이해의 대상이 아니라 존재의 근원이시며 하나님의 신비는 해석보다는 그 안에 열린 마음으로 머무는 것이 믿음임을 희미하게나마 알게 된것 같습니다.
시작이며 끝이신 하나님의 시간은 시간의 양 끝을 붙들어 하나의 원이 되는 것 같다는 생각을 합니다. 그 안에서 우리는 과거와 미래가 동시에 현재로 들어오는 신비를 봅니다. 하나님은 끝에서 시작을 부르시고 시작에서 끝을 품으십니다. 그리고 그 모든 시간의 중심에는 언제나 하나님이 항상 함께 하시는 지금이 있습니다. 하나님이 함께 하시는 그 모든 시간을 감사드립니다. 오늘도 살게 해주신 하나님께 감사드립니다.
Revelation 22:13 : "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
In the Book of Revelation, God declares three times that He is the Alpha and the Omega,
the One who is both the beginning and the end. Two words that seem to oppose each other coexist in perfect harmony within God. To accept this paradox is, I believe, the essence of faith.
Human time moves along a straight line. There is a starting point and an ending point; causes lead to effects in sequence. But the divine declaration, "I am the Alpha and the Omega," does not lie on that line. God does not exist within the flow of time. He holds the flow of time itself. In the world of Revelation, the end is not destruction but completion,
and the beginning is another name for an ending that carries the seed of creation.
When I encounter this mysterious truth, I can no longer read Revelation as a prophecy of doom. It is not a book of destruction but a revelation of the One who reigns over time and space. What looks to human eyes like an ending is, in God’s eyes, the threshold of restoration. At the very point where beginning and end intersect, God reveals Himself as the One who is always present.
For a long time, I tried to grasp this mystery with words, but it always slipped away. Then one day I realized perhaps it was never meant to be explained. God is not an object of comprehension but the source of existence itself. Faith, I have come to understand, is not about analyzing the mystery but about dwelling within it, open and still.
The time of God, who is both beginning and end, seems to hold the two ends of time together, forming a perfect circle. Within that circle, the past and the future meet and enter the present as one. God calls forth the beginning from the end and embraces the end within the beginning. And at the center of all that time is always the present moment, the now where God is with us.
I give thanks for every moment held within His hands, and I give thanks to the God who lets me live this day within His eternal time.
