The seed

Someone sows someone

Sows him in his head

Stamps the earth down well

Waits for the seed to sprout

The seed hollows out his head

Turns it into a mouse hole

The mice eat the seed

There they lie dead

The wind comes to live in the empty head

And gives birth to fickle breeze

(Vasko Popa Selected Poems, translated by Anne Pennington, Penguin Books, 1969)

Seeds

Someone plants someone else

Plants him in his head

Stamps the earth well

Waits for the seed to sprout

The seed empties his head

Turns it into a mousehole

The mice eat the seed

Die all on the spot

The wind moves into the empty head

And begins to give birth to its own little winds

(Homage to the lame wolf, translated by Charles Simic, Oberlin College Press, 1987)
