Vasko Popa (조영필 역)

The Dream of the Quartz Pebble
A hand appeared out of the earth
Flung the pebble into the air
Where is the pebble
It hasn’t come back to earth
It hasn’t climbed up to heaven
What’s become of the pebble
Have the heights devoured it
Has it turned into a bird
Here is the pebble
Stubborn it has stayed in itself
Not in heaven nor in earth
It obeys itself
Amongst the worlds a world
(Vasko Popa Selected Poems, translated by Anne Pennington, Penguin Books, 1969)
Dream of the Pebble
A hand springs out of the earth
It throws a pebble in the air
Where is the pebble
It didn’t return to earth
Nor did it climb to heaven
What happened to the pebble
Did the heights devour it
Did it change into a bird
Here is the pebble
It remained stubborn in itself
Neither on earth nor in heaven
It listens to itself
Amongst the worlds a world
