1. 의심스러울 땐 코를 가져다 대라
당신은 새로운 음식을 마주했을 때, 먼저 그것이 무엇인지 묻는다. 성분은 무엇이고, 칼로리는 얼마이며, 다른 사람들의 평가는 어떤지 찾아본다. 당신은 머리로 정보를 수집하고 분석한 뒤에야 비로소 혀를 댄다.
나는 그렇게 복잡하게 알려고 하지 않는다. 낯선 음식이 앞에 놓이면, 나는 가장 먼저 조심스럽게 다가가 코를 킁킁거린다. 이 냄새는 신선한가? 상하지는 않았나? 내가 먹어도 되는 것인가? 나의 코는 수만 년 동안 축적된 생존의 데이터베이스다. 나는 책이나 다른 이의 평가가 아니라, 나의 코가 말해주는 진실을 믿는다. 냄새가 ‘아니다’라고 말하면, 나는 뒤도 돌아보지 않고 자리를 뜬다.
당신들의 세상은 눈에 보이는 것과 귀에 들리는 말들로 가득 차 있다. 화려한 포장, 그럴듯한 약속, 논리적인 설명. 당신들은 거기에 너무 쉽게 현혹된다. 하지만 말과 글은 얼마든지 거짓을 말할 수 있다. 겉모습은 얼마든지 속일 수 있다.
그러나 냄새는 거짓말을 하지 않는다.
인간, 당신에게도 이런 ‘코’가 있다. 당신들은 그것을 ‘직감’ 혹은 ‘본능’이라고 부른다. 어떤 사람을 만났을 때 설명할 수 없이 느껴지는 불편함, 어떤 제안을 들었을 때 마음속에서 울리는 미세한 경고음. 그것이 바로 당신의 영혼이 맡는 ‘냄새’다.
하지만 당신은 그 미세한 냄새를 무시하고, 머리가 만들어낸 논리를 따른다. ‘저 사람은 좋은 사람이야, 조건이 좋잖아, 모두가 좋다고 하잖아.’ 그렇게 스스로를 설득하고는 결국 잘못된 선택을 하고 만다.
이제부터 의심스러운 상황을 마주하면 나처럼 해보라. 분석을 멈추고, 눈을 감고, 조용히 코를 킁킁거려보라. 이 상황은 어떤 냄새가 나는가? 부패의 냄새인가, 신선함의 냄새인가? 당신의 마음 깊은 곳에서 어떤 느낌이 올라오는가?
머리가 아니라 몸이 말해주는 진실을 신뢰하는 법을 배워라. 당신의 직감은 당신의 머리보다 훨씬 더 오래되고 현명한 감각이다. 보이지 않는 진실은 언제나 공기 중에 떠다니고 있다. 그것을 맡을 수 있는 코를 다시 깨워라.
화려한 말은 귀를 속이고, 번지르르한 겉모습은 눈을 속이지만
진실의 냄새는 결코, 영혼의 코를 속이지 못한다.
21. When in doubt, put your nose to it. You can smell the truth that can't be seen.
When you encounter new food, you first ask what it is. What are the ingredients, how many calories, what do other people think of it? You collect and analyze information with your head before finally putting your tongue to it.
I don't try to know things in such a complicated way. When unfamiliar food is placed before me, I first carefully approach and sniff with my nose. Is this smell fresh? Has it spoiled? Is it something I can eat? My nose is a database of survival accumulated over tens of thousands of years. I trust the truth my nose tells me, not books or others' evaluations. If the smell says "no," I leave without looking back.
Your world is filled with things visible to the eyes and words audible to the ears. Fancy packaging, plausible promises, logical explanations. You're too easily deceived by these. But words and writing can lie as much as they want. Appearances can deceive as much as they want.
But smell doesn't lie.
Human, you also have such a "nose." You call it "intuition" or "instinct." The inexplicable discomfort you feel when meeting someone, the subtle warning sound that rings in your heart when hearing a proposal. That's the "smell" your soul detects.
But you ignore that subtle smell and follow the logic your head creates. "That person is good, the conditions are good, everyone says it's good." You convince yourself this way and end up making wrong choices.
From now on, when you face suspicious situations, try doing it like me. Stop analyzing, close your eyes, and quietly sniff. What does this situation smell like? Does it smell of decay or freshness? What feeling rises from deep in your heart?
Learn to trust the truth your body tells you, not your head. Your intuition is a much older and wiser sense than your head. Invisible truth is always floating in the air. Awaken the nose that can smell it.
Fancy words deceive the ears, shiny appearances deceive the eyes
But the smell of truth can never deceive the soul's nose.
