10. LITT SHING KUNG (spot 10: entrance, Litt Shing Kung)

Situated in the middle of the Man Mo Temple Compound, Litt Shin Kung is originally a three-hall-two courtyard building. The two courtyards were later covered by steel roofs.

The Kung Sor in the far right is a simple one-hall structure. The historic granite doorframe, on which the year of construction is inscribed, is still well-preserved.

The Kung Sor has been converted into a souvenir shop.

The modern structure attached to the back of Kung Sor is named Virtue Court (善德宮), which was added in 1994 for people to worship their ancestors.

11. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF KWUN YUM (spot 11: inside, Litt Shing Temple)

In the middle of the Man Mo Temple Compound is Litt Shing Kung, which houses the deity of Kwun Yum.

Also known as the Goddess of Mercy, Kwun Yum is the most popular and the best-loved of all deities among Chinese nowadays. She is revered for her gentleness, mercy, love of mankind and sympathy for the underprivileged, and is worshipped by people of both Taoist and Buddhist religion. There are a number of temples in Hong Kong dedicated to her worship. In these temples, the statue of Kwun Yum can be easily identified by her beauty, serenity, compassionate countenance and her gorgeous robes, as you can see in the altar of Litt Shing Kung.

There are many legends about the origin of Kwun Yum. One of the most widely known ones refers her as the youngest of three daughters of a king in a Southeast Asian country. She was beautiful, gentle, and had great compassion fot the suffering of all living things. Because of her beauty and chastity, many princes had come to ask for her hand, but she refused to marry. Instead, she wholly devoted herself to learn and practice the Buddhist faith and then entered a convent to become a nun. This greatly enraged her father, who, in his anger, set fire to the convent. She was not hurt in the fire, but was caught and later executed. After death, she arrived at the underworld and levied suffering of its beings by her love and virtues. The King of Hell, Yim Lo, was displeased and ordered her to be expatriated back to earth, where she spent nine years in devotion to the practice of the doctrines of Buddhism. Finally, she attained Buddhahood and ascended to heaven on the 19th day of the ninth moon.

12. DECORATED RIDGE (spot 12: exit, Litt Shing Kung)

The magnificent ridge of the Man Mo Temple was made in 1893. It is decorated with exquisite Shiwan (a place in South China which is famous for producing ceramic figurines) ceramic figrines, probably depicting scenes of Chinese opera. In the upper section of the ridge, there is a pearl in the middle, which has the symbolic meaning of 'things flourish as one's wish'. Two dragon fishes are placed at the ends of the ridge, symbolizing the wish of 'achieving the first place'. All these have connotations of good virtues and wishes in traditional Chinese architecture.

It is also interesting to note that brick carvings can be found of the gable front (墀頭) of Man Mo Temple and Kung Sor while the gable front of Litt Shing Kung is decorated with Shiwan ceramic figurines.
