공화당 독점 ‘애국 자유’ 민주당 ‘생명 자유’ 해리스 후보 ‘자유’ 쟁점
미 공화당이 1980년대 동서냉전체제 전유물이던 ‘애국심 자유’가 민주당 전당대회에서 ‘생명권 자유’로 전환되면서 이번 대선의 쟁점이 됐다.
시카고에서의 민주당 전당대회에서는 가수 제이슨 이스벨(Jason Isbell)의 컨트리 히트곡 "Something More Than Free"가 나오며 "(Freedom)자유" 팻말을 든 참석자가 다수 등장했다.
ABC TV는 “‘자유’라는 단어는 모든 참석자와 연사의 입에 오르내리며이 민주당 전당대회는 그간 공화당이 ‘자유’와 성조기에 대한 애국 메시지를 수십년 소유해온 이후 애국심을 되찾기 위한 수십 년간의 민주당 노력의 정점을 나타냈다”며 “‘자유’는 해리스의 결집적 구호가 되었고, 해리스와 당 전체가 밀어붙인 운동의 절정이 됐다”고 21일 보도했다.
중도좌파 싱크탱크인 '제3의 길' 공동 창립자 짐 케슬러는 "80년대와 90년대에 총으로 자유의 외투를 장악한 공화당이 있었으나 수정헌법 제2조는 미국 최초의 자유였다"며 "생명권도 자유의 한 버전이었다. 민주당원들이 자유를 지지하는 곳에서는 국기를 불태우는 것과 같은 나쁜 행동을 할 수 있는 면허가 있었다"고 전당대회에서 ABC에 말했다.

해리스 부통령은 대선 캠페인에서 생식 보건 서비스에 접근할 수 있는 자유와 민주적 절차를 넘어 학생들이 총에 맞지 않고 학교에 다닐 수 있는 자유부터 경제적으로 '출세'할 수 있는 자유에 이르기까지 모든 것을 밀어붙이는 데 이 ‘자유’ 메시지를 사용하고 있다.
미국 최대 노조인 AFL-CIO(미 노동연맹 산별 조직회의) 리즈 슐러 의장은 민주당 전국위원회 여성 간부회의 회의에서 "우리는 자유를 위해 싸우고 있습니까? 나도 그렇게 생각했다"며 "자유는 의료 빚에 빠져 익사하는 것이 아니다. 자유는 남자가 같은 일을 해서 받는 것과 같은 봉급을 받는 것이다. 자유는 우리 자신의 몸에 대한 결정을 스스로 내리는 것이다"고 말했다.

윤석열 대통령은 ‘자유’를 광복절 기념사에서 16번 반복하며 ‘자유 통일’을 광복으로 15일 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이어 21일 한미연합훈련 작전본부에서 한미 장병들에게 "전 장병은 우리 국민의 생명과 안전, 자유민주주의 체제를 지켜내겠다는 신념으로 무장해야 한다"며 "적화통일을 꿈꾸며 호시탐탐 대한민국을 노리고 있는 북한 정권에게 '침략은 곧 정권의 종말'이라는 사실을 확실하게 인식시켜야 한다"고 밝혔다. kimjc00@hanmail.net
