한 후보자는 ‘한겨레’ 최초 4일 보도 직후 “딸의 이름으로 기부했다는 한겨레 보도는 사실이 아니다”라며 “정상적인 봉사활동을 무리한 프레임 씌우기로 폄훼한 것”이라 밝혔다.

‘조선비즈’는 <한겨레는 이날 오전 ‘한동훈 딸도 ‘부모 찬스’로 대학진학용 ‘기부 스펙’ 의혹’이라는 제목의 기사를 통해 한 후보자의 딸이 엄마의 인맥을 이용해 기업으로부터 노트북 50대를 후원받아 대학 진학을 위한 기부 스펙을 쌓았다는 의혹을 제기했다.
이에 대해 한 후보자 측은 “딸의 이름으로 기부했다는 한겨레 보도는 사실이 아니다”라며 “기업의 사회공헌 차원에서 이뤄진 ‘중고노트북 기증사실’이 어떻게 후보자 딸의 대학진학 스펙과 관련이 있는지 도무지 납득하기 어렵다”고 했다>고 보도했다.

한 후보자 입장문은 “사실과 다른 부분이 많아 설명드린다. 해당 기업은 내규에 따른 공정한 심사 절차를 거치고 복지시설 측과 기증 절차를 협의한 후 직접 기업 명의로 기증한 것이었고, 후보자의 딸 이름으로 기증이 이뤄진 것이 아니다. 기부증 영수증도 후보자 장녀가 아니라 해당 기업 명의로 발급됐으므로 딸 이름으로 기부했다는 한겨레 보도는 사실이 아니다. 후보자는 이 모든 과정에 전혀 관여한 사실이 없다>이다.출판물에 의한 명예훼손은 공익적 보도에 대해 ‘고의성’ 유무가 쟁점이고 이를 한국에서 수사관이 판단하고 법원이 수사관 직접 심문없이 인정해 국제 기준과 충돌한다.
