풀 크루그먼 교수가 미국 인플레법(IRA)에 대해 ‘반민주적 공화당과 정치 투쟁에서 민주당이 기후대응 정책에 일자리 창출 입증용’으로 한국 언론에 밝혔다.
풀 크루그먼 뉴욕시립대 교수(노벨경제상 수상) 3일 ‘매일경제’ 인터뷰로 “한국은 조 바이든 행정부에서 직면한 제약들에 대해 현실적으로 바라볼 필요가 있다. 미국에서 매우 반민주적인 한 정당과 지금 위험한 정치적인 투쟁이 벌어지고 있다”며 “친민주주의 정당은 특히 (인플레이션 감축법에 담긴 전기차 보조금 등) 기후대응 정책이 미국 일자리를 창출한다는 것을 보여줄 필요가 있다. 무역협정에 관해 제소하더라도 미국 정부에 많은 영향을 미치지 않을 것”이라 밝혔다.
김성한 국가안보실장은 미 안보보좌관과 안보실장 회의 후 "인플레 감축법이 전기차에 국한된 법이라기보다는 공급망, 특히 자유주의 국가들 간의 공급망 문제를 어떻게 재정립해 나갈 것인지 전략적 방향성이 담긴 측면이 있다고 미측이 강조를 했다. 그래서 우리가 그것을 확인하는 작업이 필요할 것 같고“라고 한국 기자들에게 밝혔다.
주미일본대사관 대변인은 미 ‘폴리티코’에 "영향을 세부적으로 계속 분석할 필요가 있다면서도 공급망 협력 논의가 진전되는 가운데 이런 조치가 나온 것에 매우 우려한다"며 "이번 조치가 WTO 규정과 부합하는지에 의구심을 제기한다며 가능한 모든 경로를 통해 미측에 의견을 전달해왔고 EU를 포함한 파트너들과 계속 노력할 것"이라 말했다고 연합뉴스TV가 위싱턴발로 5일 보도했다.
네드 프라이스 미 국무부 대변인은 지난달 22일 정례브리핑에서 인플레이션 감축법 한국 기업의 피해 질문에 “이는 국내뿐 아니라 세계에서 미국의 위치에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 법률의 한 부분”이라며 “전 세계 파트너들과 기후 목표에 대한 약속 이행의 중요성을 강조하면서 미국이 기후 문제에서 진보하고 있다는 것을 보여줘야 한다. (이 법률은) 기후 문제 등 여러 이슈들에서 미국에 중요하다”고 밝혔다.
크루그먼 교수는 미국 경제에 대해 “연준이 연말에 기준금리를 4%까지 올릴 것으로 보고 있다. 이는 분명 경기 둔화(slowdown) 초래할 것이다. 결국 인플레이션을 식히기 위해 경제 속도를 늦추는 것이 연준의 현재 정책 핵심”이라며 “연준의 긴축정책도 바뀌지 않을 것이다. 근원적 인플레이션을 낮추는 데는 시간이 걸린다. 미국 경제가 2024년이면 코로나19 이전 상태로 돌아가겠지만, 더 오래 걸릴 수 있다”고 매일경제 인터뷰로 밝혔다.kimjc00@hanmail.net
