마리아(Maria)는 더블린의 등불 세탁소(Dublin by Lamplight)에서 일하는 중년의 여자다. 그렇다, <이처럼 사소한 것들(Small Things Like These)>의 악명 높은 그 세탁소 말이다. 그러나 그것이 곧 마리아가 '타락한 여자들(Fallen women)' 중의 하나였음을 의미하는 건 아니다. 그저 변변한 집도, 의지할 가족도 없는 그녀가 남아있을 수 있는 세계의 몇 안되는 장소 중의 하나가 세탁소였을 뿐. 생의 어딘가쯤에 세탁소로 내던져지는 것은 비단 더러워진 빨랫감 뿐만이 아니었던 것이다.

제임스 조이스(James Joyce)가 <진흙(Clay)>에서 묘사한 더블린의 만성절 전야(All Hollows' Eve) 풍경은 꽤 흥미롭다. 켈트력상 한 해의 시작은 1월이 아닌 11월이므로 10월의 마지막 날 밤은 그들에게 우리의 새해 전야와 같은 의미를 갖는다. 일설에 의하면 켈트인들의 독특한 역법과 풍습이 훗날 만성절과 할로윈(Halloween)의 시초가 되었다고 한다. 등불 세탁소의 티타임에 등장한 밤브랙(Barmbrack) 또한 그 풍습 중 하나라고 보면 되겠다.

올해의 첫 빵은 그래서 밤브랙이다! 밤브랙은 일종의 포춘(fortune) 브레드라 할 수 있다. 수확이 끝난 들판이 검은 하늘로 덮이기 시작하는 때에 켈트인들은 밤브랙을 구워 다가올 내일을 점쳤는데, 빵 안에 넣고 구운 각종 상징물(동전, 반지, 콩 등)을 발견하는 사람이 각각의 상징에 해당하는 미래를 부여받는 방식이다(감자껍질파이의 2025년 운세는 비밀에 부친다).

오후에는 남은 빵을 연어, 그리고 뜨거운 차와 함께 먹었다. 이 생연어 등심은 세일할 때 가끔 사는데 그냥 먹어도 맛있고 후토마끼 해먹기에도 아주 제격이다.

Mrs. Donnelly said "Do, please, Maria!" and so Maria had to get up and stand beside the piano. Mrs. Donnelly bade the children be quiet and listen to Maria's song. Then she played the prelude and said "Now, Maria!" and Maria, blushing very much began to sing in a tiny quavering voice. She sang I Dreamt that I Dwelt, and when she came to the second verse she sang again:

티타임을 마지막으로 일과를 마친 마리아는 서둘러 조(Joe)의 집으로 향한다. 한때 마리아는 그와 그의 형제인 알피(Alphy)의 유모로서 그들과 한 집에 살았지만 그들의 가정이 와해되면서 세탁소로 거처를 옮기게 된 것이다. 무튼 마리아가 조의 집에서 열린 저녁 파티를 갑분싸 만든 문제의 그 노래, <I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls>를 듣는 것으로 새해의 티타임을 마무리하도록 하자. 가엾은 마리아, 인간은 누구나 본능적으로 자신의 미래를 예견하는 것이다. 다만 검은 얼룩이 그 일부를 가리고 있을 뿐. '마리아의 시대'에 인간을 구원한 것은 결국 신이 아니라 세탁기였다.

225g all purpose flour

¼ tea spoon instant yeast

2 table spoon sugar

½ table spoon mixed spice

¼ table spoon salt

60ml warm milk

30ml warm water

30g butter

½ egg
