The APEC Leaders' Meeting came to a close earlier on this Saturday in the historic city of Gyeongju with a declaration designed to drive forward the forum's commitment to collaboration. Our Presidential Office Correspondent Song Yoo-jin reports. Twenty years after the 2005 Busan Roadmap, which promoted free trade, this year's APEC Leaders' Meeting, chaired by President Lee Jae Myung, wrapped up in Gyeongju with the adoption of the APEC Leaders' Gyeongju Declaration. "The declaration lays out APEC's long-term vision for an open, dynamic, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community, and reaffirms the member economies' commitment to cooperation for recovery and growth."
--------------
One of the biggest questions going into the Leaders' Meeting was whether a joint declaration could be adopted, because it requires unanimous approval from all 21 APEC member economies. There was particular attention on whether the declaration would address trade, given rising protectionism and U.S.–China tensions. In the end, the Gyeongju Declaration says APEC will keep pushing regional economic integration, including continuing work on the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

"We shared the understanding that expanding mutual trade is essential for sustained prosperity and growth of the Asia-Pacific region. And for the first time in APEC Leaders' Meeting history, the Gyeongju Declaration explicitly recognizes "cultural and creative industries" as a driver of growth and as a way to build mutual understanding across the region. Also adopted were two separate outcome documents: the "APEC Artificial Intelligence Initiative" and the "APEC Collaborative Framework for Demographic Changes."

These mark the forum's first written agreements on cooperating in artificial intelligence, and on responding to the region's aging and shrinking populations. "We agreed that AI and demographic change are challenges all APEC members share. Because no single economy can address them alone, we must share best practices and find joint solutions." The AI Initiative calls for stronger collaboration among governments, industry, and academia, and for expanded investment in AI infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the framework on demographic changes lays out measures, from expanding lifelong education and employment opportunities, to improving access to quality healthcare through advanced technology. "With the two-day APEC Leaders' Meeting now over, what remains to be seen is how the member economies will work together toward a better future for peace and prosperity across the Asia-Pacific.
