누구를 위하여 종은 울리나

사람은 누구나 완벽할 순 없습니다.
상처를 입고, 그 상처를 스스로 껴안고 살아가야 합니다.
그러나
누가 종을 울리는지 보지 말고,
스스로 그 종을 울리세요.
일어서서 한걸음 한걸음 다가가서 종을 울리세요.

누구든 그 자체로서 온전한 섬은 아니다.
모든 인간은 대륙의 한 조각이며, 전체의 일부이다.
만일 흙덩이가 바닷물에 씻겨 내려가면
유럽의 땅은 그만큼 작아지며,
만일 갑(岬)이 그리되어도 마찬가지며
만일 그대의 친구들이나 그대의 영지(領地)가 그리되어도 마찬가지이다.
어느 누구의 죽음도 나를 감소시킨다.
왜냐하면 나는 인류 전체 속에 포함되어 있기 때문이다.
그러니 누구를 위하여 종이 울리는지를 알고자 사람을 보내지 말라!
종은 그대를 위해서 울리는 것이니!
