자작시 낭송

시인이 자기 시를 직접 낭송하는 것으로 내게 크게 감명을 준 이는 김남주와 딜란 토마스였다. 김남주의 <이 가을에 나는>(아래 1)과 딜란 토마스의 <Do not go gently into that good night>(아래 2)이다.

그리고 오늘 마야 안젤루의 자작시 <Still I Rise>

낭송을 감명 깊게 보고 들었다.(아래 3)

그래도 나 일어나리라

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise.

당신이 내 역사를 써내려갈지 모르지

쓰디쓰고 왜곡된 거짓으로,

당신은 날 먼지투성이로 뭉갤지 모르지

그러나 먼지처럼 나 일어나리라

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

내 메시지로 뒤틀렸나?

왜 꿀꿀해졌나?

내 안방에서 원유라도 펑펑 솟아나는 양

내가 당당히 걷기 때문인가.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise.

매일 뜨는 달처럼 해처럼

밀물과 썰물의 반복처럼 확실하게

희망은 높이높이 떠오르듯이

나 홀연히 일어나리라

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

내가 부서지는 꼴을 보고싶었던가?

머리를 조아리고 눈을 아래로 떨구고?

눈물 방울처럼 두 어깨도 바닥으로 쳐지고?

울부짖으며 나약해지고?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don't you take it awful hard

'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines

Diggin' in my own backyard.

나의 호탕함이 거슬린가?

견디기가 끔직히도 어렵겠지.

내 뒷마당을 파다가

금맥이라도 발견한 듯 웃어재끼니까?

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I'll rise.

당신은 말로 나에게 총질할지 모르지,

매서운 눈초리로 날 베어버릴지도 모르고,

증오로 날 죽일지도,

그러나 홀연히, 공기처럼, 나 일어나리라

Does my sexiness upset you?

At the meeting of my thighs?

나의 (못난)섹시함에 구역질나겠지?

내 두 허벅지가 만나는 곳에

다이아몬드를 끼우고 춤추듯 하니까

놀라 자빠지겠지?

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,

고통속으로 뿌리내린 과거로부터...

난 솟꾸치고 퍼져나가는 흑인의 바다이다.

조류라도 품을정도로 풍성해지고 부풀어 오르리라

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear

테러와 두려움의 어두운 나날을 뒤로하고

나 일어나리라

경이롭도록 선명한 여명속으로 뛰어들며
