해파리 이야기
[사랑이를 위한 엽서동화 편]
해파리 이야기
향이는 개똥아저씨랑 바닷가에 갔다. 우리는 밀려오는 파도랑 놀았다. 여기저기 조개도 줍고, 소라도 주웠다. 그때 바닷속에 둥둥 떠다니는 것을 향이가 발견했다.
“아저씨! 저거 뭐야?”
“응?”
개똥아저씨는 바닷가에 파도를 타고 밀려오는 해파리 떼를 바라보았다. 그리고 바닷물에 들어가 해파리를 두 손안에 가져왔다. 그리고는 향이에게 보여주며 말했다.
“해파리 새끼란다.”
“해파리? 징그럽기도 하고 귀엽기도 해!”
“그렇지? 해초도 아니고 물고기도 아니란다. 아니, 해초이고 물고기라 할 수도 있겠지? 왜 해파리인 줄 아니?”
“뭐라고 해요?”
“여럿 이름이 있지만, 아저씨만 아는 것 말해줄까?”
“네.”
“해파리는 해와 파리가 붙여진 거지. 해는 바다(Sea)를 뜻하고, 파리는 푸른빛을 띠고 날다(Fly)를 뜻하지. 바닷속에서 날아다니며 햇빛을 받으면 푸르게 보이지. 그래서 한국말로는 ‘해파리’라고 부르는 거란다.”
"이름이 예뻐요. 해파리!"
“자, 여기 작은 병에 넣어서 집에 가서 보여줄게.........”
향이는 개똥아저씨랑 해파리를 담은 작은 병을 들고 집으로 돌아왔다. 그리고 빨강셀로판지 사이로 해파리를 향해 손전등을 밝혔다. 그러자 해파리는 빨갛게 빛났다. 이번엔 푸른색 셀로판지 사이로 해파리는 파랗게 빛났다. 노란색 셀로판지 사이로는 해파리가 노랗게 빛났다. 향이는 그것이 신기하고 재미있어했다.
그날 밤에 향이는 꿈속에서 해파리가 되어 푸른 바닷속을 돌아다니고 있었다. 그때에 다른 해파리들이 그에게 몰려왔다. 해파리가 된 향이는 해파리들이 몰려오는 것을 보고 놀랐다.
“너희들, 왜 내게로 몰려오는 거야?”
“우리? 뭉쳐야 살고 헤어지면 죽는다고 이승만대통령이 말한 거 기억 안 나?”
“알지!”
“우리 따라와 봐~”
해파리 향이는 해파리 친구들을 따라갔다. 바다 밑에 바위들에는 커다란 해파리들이 붙어있었다. 그리고 화려하게 해파리의 길고 짧은 팔들을 흔들며 춤추고 있었다. 해파리들은 너무나 멋지고 아름다웠다. 어떤 해파리는 춤을 추다가 아기 해파리 하나가 떨어져 나갔다. 그 아기 해파리가 향이에게로 왔다.
“안녕! 나 방금 태어난 해파리야~ 반갑다.”
“넌, 나랑 똑같이 생겼구나!”
그때에 수많은 아기 해파리들이 바닷속에서 치마처럼 펄럭였다. 그리고 바다 위로 올라가고 내려오고 했다. 여기저기를 날아가듯이 움직여 갔다. 해파리 향이도 그 친구들을 따라 춤을 추듯이 바닷속을 돌아다녔다. 햇빛이 바닷속으로 비추어주니, 해파리들은 푸른빛을 내다 초록빛을 내다 노란빛을 내고 하였다. 마치 축제처럼 보였다. 해파리 향이도 그들 속에서 함께 춤을 추며 놀았다.

Jellyfish story
Hyang went to the beach with the dogddong uncle. We played with the rushing waves and picked up clams and gave them conch here and there. At that time, Hyang found something floating in the sea.
"Uncle, What's that?"
The dogddong uncle saw the swarm of jellyfishes rushing on the waves by the sea. He went into the sea and brought the jellyfish in his hands. And he showed it to Hyang and said.
"It's a jellyfish baby."
"Jellyfish? It's gross and cute."
"Right? It's not seaweed or fish. In other words, it can be both seaweed and fish. Do you know why it's called jellyfish?"
"I don't know."
“There are many names. Do you want me to tell you what only uncle know?"
"Yes."
"Jellyfish are a combination of the sea and the flying. The Hae means the sea, and the Fari means blue and flying in the sky. When it flying in the sea, it looks blue by the sunlight. That's why they call it 'Haefari' in Korean."
"The name is pretty. Haefari!"
"Now, I'll put it in an small bottle here and show it to you when I get home."
Hyang returned home with a small bottle of jellyfish with dogddong-uncle. And he lit a flashlight toward the jellyfish through the red cellophane. Then the jellyfish glowed red. This time, the jellyfish glowed blue through the blue cellophane. And through the yellow cellophane, jellyfish glowed yellow. Hyang found it fascinating and interesting.
That night, Hyang was wandering in the blue sea like a jellyfish in his dream. Then, other jellyfishes flocked to him. However, Hyang that turned into a jellyfish was surprised by the influx of jellyfish.
"Why are you coming to me?"
"We? President Syngman Rhee said that if we unite, we live and if we scatter, we die! Do you remember?"
"I know!"
"Come with us!"
Hyang of jellyfish followed his jellyfish friends. There were large jellyfish attached to the rocks under the sea. And the jellyfish were dancing, waving their colorful, long, short arms. Jellyfish was so cool and beautiful. Some jellyfish were dancing when a baby jellyfish fell off. The baby jellyfish came to Hyang of jellyfish.
"Hi, I'm a jellyfish who just born. Nice to meet you!"
"You look exactly like me."
At that time, numerous baby jellyfish fluttered like skirts in the sea. And it went up and down and it went around here and there. Jellyfish Hyang also danced around with them. The sunshine coming the swa, and the jellyfish were blue, green, yellow. It looked like a festival. Jellyfish Hyang also danced and played in them together.
