Close Your Eyes

Day 125: 13 May 2016, Melbourne

Close your eyes.

A gust of sea breeze caresses your cheeks,

and a whiff of saltness stimulates your nose.

Incessant splash of waves whisper into your ears.

Keep your eyes closed.

Picture a girl,

a girl with her hair braided in a high ponytail,

every strand of hair neatly woven into one another.

The outlines of her face, hair and body are clearly marked, yet you can’t see her face.

She is looking out to the ocean, imagining what lies beyond the horizon.

You want to call her, but her name lingers at the tip of your tongue.

So you reach out your hand to tap on her shoulder.

Just before you feel the touch of her black wool coat,

you open your eyes.

There, a bleak, white ceiling stares back at you.

The dream is over.

바닷바람이 볼을 쓰다듬고,

짠맛이 콧속을 자극하고,

끊임없이 부딪히는 파도 소리가 속삭여요.

눈은 계속 감고 있어 보세요.

머릿속에서 여자아이를 그려보세요.

높게 땋아올린 머리의 여자아이 말이에요.

머리칼 한 올 한 올은 정성스럽게 그리고 반듯하게 땋아 있고,

얼굴과 머리카락, 그리고 몸의 윤곽은 분명하지만, 그녀의 얼굴은 보이지 않아요.

바다를 바라보고 있어요. 수평선 너머의 무언가를 상상하면서 말이에요.

그녀를 불러보고 싶지만, 그녀의 이름은 혀끝에 맴돌 뿐.

그래서 그녀의 어깨를 두드리려 손을 내밀어요.

검은 양털 코트에 손이 닿기 직전,

눈이 떠져요.

쓸쓸한 흰색 천장이 당신을 빤히 보고 있어요.

꿈이 끝났네요.
