현대차 정몽구 재단 미디어아트 공모전 수상작 #지속가능성
감사하게도 현대차 정몽구 재단 온드림 소사이어티에서 주관한, 지속가능성, sustainability를 주제로 하는 미디어아트 공모전에서 수상했습니다. 예전 회사에서 관련 주제로 현대차에 컨설팅을 해준 적이 있어 감회가 남다르네요.
작업의 형식적 측면을 축약하면, 현대차의 2023년 지속가능성 보고서를 분석하여 영상과 사운드를 만들었다고 할 수 있습니다만, 흥미롭고도 중요한 부분은 내용적인 측면을 함의하는 제작 프로세스였습니다. 현대차와 재단이 자사의 지속가능성에 대한 노력을 대중에게 설명하는 것이 쉽지 않았던 것처럼, 관련된 일을 해본 저 또한 지속가능성을 표현하는 것에 대한 고민이 있었습니다. 재미있는 건 이 개념이 무엇인지 대략 알지만 구체적인 시각 이미지를 상상해 내기 어려운 것은 사람뿐만 아니라 AI, LLM(Large Language Model)도 마찬가지였습니다. 이 지점에서 인공지능을 사용해야 하는, 대화해야 하는 당위성을 발견했습니다. 대중에게 이 개념을 설명하고 상상하게 만드는 것이, 대중의 데이터에 기반해 만들어진 LLM과 대화하며 이해, 상상하게 만드는 것과 닮아있는 것이죠. 그래서 일종의 사고실험으로 AI와 협력적으로 지속가능성을 이해, 정의, 설명해 보는 게 작업의 프로세스였습니다.
쉬운 예시를 들자면 의자라는 단어를 쓰지 않고 의자를 묘사하여 상상하게 하는 것입니다. 그렇다면 먼저 의자는 어떤 컴포넌트로 이루어져 있는지 생각해 보게 됩니다. 배면, 각부, 좌면이 있죠. 그런데 배면이 없는 스툴 형태도 우리는 의자라고 합니다. 각부가 4개여야만 하나요? 다리가 하나인 bar chair도 있습니다. 심지어 각부가 없는 bean bag형태도 우리는 의자라고 부릅니다. 그렇다면 우리는 여기서 의자라는 것을 앉을 수 있는 순간을 제공하는 것으로, 다른 차원의 재정의를 해볼 수 있는 것이죠. 이런 사고실험 프로세스를 통해서 지속가능성이 어떤 시각적인 요소와 사운드로 표현되어야 하는지 탐색했고, 이 작업은 그 과정의 흔적이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.
I am honored to have been awarded in the media art competition hosted by the Hyundai Motor Group's Mong-Koo Chung Foundation's On Dream Society, which focused on the theme of sustainability. Having previously consulted Hyundai Motor on related topics during my time at a former company, this recognition holds a special significance for me.
In essence, the formal aspect of my work can be summarized as an analysis of Hyundai Motor's 2023 Sustainability Report, resulting in the creation of visual and auditory elements. However, the truly fascinating and crucial aspect lies in the production process itself, which embodies the contextual dimensions of the piece. Just as Hyundai Motor and the foundation found it challenging to effectively communicate their sustainability efforts to the public, I, too, grappled with the dilemma of expressing sustainability through my work. Interestingly, the difficulty in envisioning specific visual representations of this concept was not unique to humans; even AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) faced similar hurdles. This realization underscored the necessity and justification for engaging in dialogue with artificial intelligence. The process of explaining and sparking the imagination of the public regarding this concept mirrors the act of conversing with LLMs, which are built upon public data, to facilitate understanding and imagination. Thus, my creative process involved a form of thought experiment, collaborating with AI to comprehend, define, and elucidate sustainability.
To illustrate with a simple example, imagine describing a chair without using the word "chair" itself. This prompts a consideration of the components that constitute a chair: the back, legs, and seat. However, we also recognize stool-like forms without backs as chairs. Must a chair always have four legs? Bar chairs with a single leg exist. We even refer to bean bag forms lacking legs as chairs. This leads us to a redefining of the concept of a chair as something that provides a moment of seating, transcending its conventional understanding. Through such thought experiments, I explored how sustainability should be expressed through visual elements and sound. This work, therefore, serves as a testament to that exploratory process.
