The Faith That Chooses to Stay
빌립보서 1장 23-24절 : 나는 그 둘 사이에서 갈등하고 있습니다. 나는 이 세상을 떠나서 그리스도와 함께 있고 싶습니다. 그것이 훨씬 더 좋은 일입니다. 그러나 내가 육신으로 남아 있는 것이 여러분을 위해서는 더 필요합니다.
바울은 세상을 떠나 그리스도와 함께하고 싶은 자신의 마음을 담담히 고백합니다. 그는 이미 세상적 가치의 무게에서 자유로워진 사람이었습니다. 하지만 그는 그 마음을 따르지 않고 육신으로 남는 선택을 "여러분을 위하여" 했다고 말합니다. 떠나는 것이 자신에게 더 좋은 일임을 알았지만 그리스도의 마음이 여전히 세상을 향해 있음을 알았기때문입니다.
그의 결단은 순종과 사랑의 형태로 드러난 믿음의 행위였습니다. 그는 자신의 소망보다 예수님의 마음을 우선했습니다. 바울에게 있어 순종이란 예수 그리스도의 마음이 머무는 자리를 함께 지키는 것이었습니다. 그리고 그는 예수님의 평강은 세상 속에서 함께 머무는 실천을 통해 완성된다는 것을 알았습니다.
하나님과 함께하는 생명을 아는 사람에게는 그 생명을 다른 사람에게 전해야 하는 사랑의 책임이 주어집니다. 진리를 깨닫는 일만큼이나 중요한 것은 그 진리의 마음으로 세상을 다시 바라보는 일입니다. 신앙은 깨달음의 깊이보다 세상 속에서 그 진리를 살아내는 실천의 깊이로 완성되어 갑니다.
하나님의 사랑은 함께 머무는 방식으로 드러납니다. 바울은 그 사랑을 이해했고 그 사랑 안에서 남기로 선택했습니다. 그는 자신의 선택을 통해 신앙은 어느 지점을 향해 도착하는 것이 아니라 관계의 지속 속에서 자라난다는 것을 보여줍니다.
아직도 갈 길이 한참 남은 이 믿음의 여정에서 항상 그리스도의 평강을 기준 삼아 함께 머무는 선택을 계속해 가길 기도합니다. 혼자가 아닌 함께할 수 있는 공동체를 주신 주님께 감사드립니다.
Philippians 1:23–24 : I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Paul speaks honestly about his longing to leave this world and be with Christ. He was already free from the weight of worldly values. Yet, he chose to remain for the sake of others. He knew that while leaving might be better for him, Christ’s heart was still turned toward the world.
His decision was an act of faith shaped by obedience and love. Paul placed Jesus’ heart above his own desire. For him, obedience meant staying where Christ’s heart still dwelled. He understood that the peace of Christ is not found in escape but in presence in the act of remaining with others in this world.
Those who have come to know life with God are entrusted with the responsibility of sharing that life with others. Understanding truth is not the end of faith; living that truth in the world is. Faith matures not through the depth of insight alone, but through the depth of practice.
God's love is revealed in the way He stays with us. Paul understood this and chose to remain in that same love. Through his choice, we see that faith is not about reaching a destination but about growing within the continuity of relationship.
On this long journey of faith, I pray that we keep choosing to stay with the peace of Christ as our guide. And I thank God for the community that allows us to walk together, never alone.
