Grace: The Gift That Finds Us
에베소서 2장 8절 : 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라.
이 말씀을 읽으면 왜 하나님께서 바울을 택하셔서 복음의 역사를 써 내려가셨는지를 알것 같습니다. 바울의 철저함과 논리력은 이 짧은 문장 안에서 인간의 존재 이유를 다시 정의합니다.
바울에 따르면 구원은 인간의 노력으로 쌓아 올린 성취가 아니라 은혜로 시작되고 믿음으로 받아들여지는 하나님의 선물입니다. 은혜는 인과와 응보의 법칙이 지배하는 세상 속에서 원인을 알 수 없는 호의로 주어집니다. 이유를 알 수 없게 주어지는 은혜는 인간의 계산과 예측을 무력화합니다. 왜 나인가라는 질문 앞에서 은혜는 자격의 문제가 아니라 하나님의 선택이라는 사실만을 강조하며 하나님을 드러냅니다.
바울은 은혜 뒤에 믿음을 언급합니다. 믿음 역시 인간의 공로가 아니라 은혜를 받아들이는 열린 태도입니다. 믿음은 무엇을 하는 행위가 아니라 스스로를 열어놓는 결단입니다. 인간이 스스로의 닫힌 문을 열 때 그 문을 통해 은혜가 들어오고 믿음이 그 은혜를 구체화 합니다. (요한계시록 3장 20절 : 볼지어다 내가 문 밖에 서서 두드리노니 누구든지 내 음성을 듣고 문을 열면 내가 그에게로 들어가 그와 더불어 먹고 그는 나와 더불어 먹으리라)
바울의 말처럼 구원은 하나님의 선물입니다. 선물은 주는 사람의 의지와 자유로 상대에게 주는 것입니다. 그래서 구원은 언제나 인간이 붙잡을 수 있는 실체가 아니라 하나님이 끊임없이 부어주시는 관계의 사건이 되는 것입니다.
바울은 우리가 하나님의 은혜없이는 설 수 없다는 것을 이해했습니다. 하지만 그 철저한 의존 속에서 진정한 자유가 주어진다는 역설도 동시에 이해했습니다. 바울에게 은혜로 인한 구원은 우리 존재의 본향을 찾아가는 사건이었습니다. 하나님께서 본래 우리가 있어야 할 자리에 우리를 두셨다는 이해의 시작이었습니다. 오늘도 그 부르심과 구원앞에 제 자신을 열어놓고 하나님의 질서 안에서 주님의 평강이 다스리는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.
Ephesians 2:8 : For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.
Reading this verse, one begins to understand why God chose Paul to write the story of the Gospel. In a single line, Paul's precision and logic redefine the reason for human existence.
According to Paul, salvation is not an achievement built by human effort, but a gift that begins in grace and is received through faith. Grace enters a world ruled by cause and consequence as a kindness without explanation. It defies every human calculation. When faced with the question, "Why me?" grace does not appeal to worthiness. It simply reveals God's choice, and in doing so, reveals God Himself.
Paul speaks of faith after grace. Faith, too, is not a human accomplishment but an openness that receives what grace gives. It is not an act of doing, but a decision to stay open. When we dare to unbar the door of our closed selves, grace enters through that space, and faith gives that grace a form. (Revelation 3:20 : Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.)
As Paul says, salvation is God’s gift. A gift exists by the giver’s will, not by the receiver's claim. And so salvation is never a possession to be held, but a living relationship that God keeps pouring out.
Paul understood that we cannot stand apart from God’s grace. Yet he also knew the paradox that in total dependence, we find true freedom. For Paul, salvation by grace was not merely rescue from sin; it was a homecoming. It was the moment when God placed us back where we were always meant to be.
Today, I open myself again to that calling and salvation to live within the quiet order of God’s grace, and to let His peace reign in the rhythm of my day.
