대리 그아저씨

오늘 술한잔 하고 대리를 불렀다. 전화 목소리도 어리숙하고 외모도 어리숙한 아저씨다. 머리 앞쪽이 막 벗겨지기 시작한 초로의 사내. 옷은 검은색 패딩인데 새벽에 추워질 것을 감안해도 너무 두꺼웠다. 마주 앉아 이야기해도 십 분 뒤면 기억이 안 날 것 같은 인상이다. 운전석에 앉아서 백미러도, 의자도, 사이드미러도 조절하지 않는다. 구부정한 자세로 불안하게 운전을 시작한다. 교통 흐름에 가까스로 방해되지 않을 정도로 느리게 차를 몬다. 터널 요금을 내려고 차문을 열고 나가서 카드를 찍는다. 팔이 좀 짧아서요, 멋적게 말한다. 주차를 하는데 술기운이 오른 내가 조마조마하다. 옆으로 너무 붙이신것같은데... 아, 네... 나중에 내리고 보니 뒷바퀴를 방지턱까지 붙이지 않아서 내 차만 불쑥 튀어나와 있다. 

수고하셨습니다. 아이고, 네. 차가 승차감이 편안하고 좋네요. 무안했는지 한마디 덧붙인다. 뒤에서 지켜봤을 때 그는 나무 등걸에 앉아서 운전하는 것처럼 보였으니 승차감은 조금도 느끼지 못했을 것이다. 대리운전 하기 어떠세요, 물어볼까 하다가 그를 맥빠지게 할까봐 묻지 않았다. 아무튼 나는 무사히 도착했고, 내 차도 출발 전과 그대로 도착해있다. 먼지와 꽃가루도 떨어지지 않고 고스란히 붙어있다. 

뻔뻔함도, 기합도 부족한 그가 대리운전을 얼마나 더 할까. 얼마나 더 해야 더 자연스러운 기사가 되는걸까. 집에 도착한 손님이 그의 귀가길과 내일을 걱정하지 않기까지, 그가 얼마나 더 어색한 인사를 해야할까. 그가 저녁시간을 가족과 보내고 밤에 아무 걱정없이 잠들기까지, 얼마나 더 밤거리를 누벼야 하는 걸까.
