The Korean movie ‘Parasite’ won the Oscar for Best Picture and three other Academy Awards. Parasite is the first non-English-language film to win the Academy best picture in the 92-year history of the award. It is also the first South Korean Film ever to earn an Oscar.
Parasite is a dark comedy about a poor South Korean family that makes up fake job experiences so they can work for a rich family. The wealthy family give them positions as a tutor, housekeeper and personal driver. Thus, the film deals with economic inequality. However, it does not judge who is right or wrong, but shows how an unequal society makes a deepen hierarchy between two classes, the rich and poor. The only way to survive for the poor is to be a parasite to the rich. The rich can not perform the basic things to live, such as cooking, driving, educating, and caring. What they can do is mainly to make money, so they hire the poor to serve them. Hence the complement between the two classes in the society can be made.
I like to watch almost all Bong Joon Ho’s movies, since they are unique, ingeniously well-organised, easy to understand underlying messages, and exciting stories. His movies are not just mimics of the reality, but it recreates a reality with organized essential factors surrounding common issues.
Social gap is a good example of a theme that fit for a nice movie. However, there are other universal themes are like generation gap, minority issue, and sexism. These might go not interesting, since many creators try to deal with them. Thus, it might require well-organised plots and bitter saires on society. Bon Junho did it well, so we call him maestro.
