원어민도 까먹는 다.
사용하지 않으면
많은 사람들은 쉬운 길을 가려한다.
공부도, 돈도, 명예도, 인생도 그리고 영어도
영어에 대한 이런저런 이야기들....
문법공부 쓸데없는데...
이런 표현이 맞고, 저런 표현이 틀리다는 갑론을박.... 쓸데없는데.... 다양할 따름인데....
그리고 영어의 본질... 언어의 본질 즉 의사소통을 잊어버린 영어....
좀 과격한 표현일지 모르나, 미국의 총기 규제를 보면서, 많은 돈이 얽히고설킨 자본주의 사회...
영어도 별반 다르지 않지 않을까 라는 생각....
그리고 영어공부의 노하우는 영어를 생활화하고, 영어에 가장 많이 노출시키는 것이 정답이라고 외치고 싶다.
스마트폰, 신문, 컴퓨터, 집에서의 대화, 영어책 읽기, 영어로 메모하기, 영어로 전화번호 외우고 전화 걸기 등 등...
사실 위의 것이 말은 쉬우나 실천하기 어렵다. 바쁜 직장인들이라면 더더욱.... 그러기에 더더욱 쉬운 길을 가려는 지도 모른다. 하지만, 쉬운 길이란.... 쉽게 얻으면 쉽게 잊히는 현실 앞에 주저앉게 되는 많은 이들을 보게 된다.... 잘못된 교육 속에 이미 허비해버린 영어교육의 희생양이 되어서...
여하간....
중고등학교 때 미국 가서, 생활하면서, 영어 까먹는 사람도 많이 보듯이
원어민들도 한국에서 영어 잘 안 쓰니 까먹는데....
영어의 환경을 다시 만들도록 해보자. 네이버나 다음의 포털을 보기보단 Korea Herald, Korea Times를 보고, 영어로 일기를 써보고, 하루에 한 문장 씩 영어를 외워보자.
잠시 외우기 팁을 드리면,
월요일에 한 문장
화요일에 한 문장 (월요일 문장 같이 외우라 그러면 총 2 문장)
수요일에 한 문장 (이전 문장과 같이 외우라 그러면 총 3 문장)
목요일에...
금요일에...
토요일에...
일요일에는 전체 다 복습한다.
그리고 한 달을 축적해서 외운다.
반복을 통해 활성화된 뇌 회로가 가속도가 붙어 쉽게 외워진다. 그리고 활성화된 회로가 머리에 각인이 된다.
오늘의 파워 잉글리시에서 정말 정곡을 찌르는 대화가 있어 dictation 해 보았습니다.
K: And I’m Kristen Cho, welcome back to a brand new week (wick) of power English. Did I just say “wick”?
B: a wick?
(long I and short I sound 주의) Are you a little drowsy today?
K: I feel that I’ve been here in Korea much too long. Perhaps. Sometimes it’s just like slips, I say things like wick? Week?
B: I think it’s bound to happen, you know.. you and I have both been here almost 20 years now around 20 years and it’s a long time, (it is…) so the influence that it has, a lot of people say well you know ‘because you grow up in a certain country, you spent your adult’s years in a certain country that sort of cements itself in your brain’ but of course if you spend 20 years in a country, in a different country, it’s gonna have some effect on you.
K: Absolutely.
B: So I think it’s only normal and it’s sometimes certain words that I might have known before I’ve forgotten,
K: that is definitely true, yeah, cause if you don’t use them
B: yeah, it’s normal you don’t use them quite as much as you might have it if you were in an English speaking country. It’s just so bound to happen.
K: Well I tell you may think “Oh… why does Kristen need to keep up with her English?” but really truly, i do I have forgotten a lot of things, so one of the reasons why I do like to watch a lot of documentaries is because as you watch them, you kind of realize “OK, right oh I remember that word.” Or like “oh alright that expression” and you realize how long it’s been since you’ve seen or heard that word or use that expression. So even if for me to do that it’s even more important for second language learners to really kind of keep up and to always kind of expose themselves to as much English as possible
B: Yeah absolutely. It’s not just for people who are learning a language but even for native speakers, you have to keep using it, you know, or you lose it.
