If you are interested in Korea, you definitely know Bulgogi, which is one of the representative foods of South Korea.
Actually, there are a lot of Bulgogi restaurants and many different types of Bulgogi, because it is widely loved by not only Korean people but also foreign people.
Bulgogi is thinly sliced pieces of beef or pork that have been marinated in a special sauce and barbecued or grilled.
Bulgogi has been eaten by Korean people for a few hundreds years. However, everyone was not able to enjoy this food even a hundred years ago, because beef was considered to be only for Kings or rich people. But, after Korean people starting to raise and import cows, more and more Korean people could enjoy this delicious dish.
Since people can eat Bulgogi in any ordinary restaurant in Korea, it is important to choose authentic bulgogi restaurant. How can you find the best Bulgogi restaurant?
Most cities would argue that "our city has a long history of Bulgogi". However, I would like to introduce Seoul style Bulgogi and Gwangyang style bulgogi.
As I mentioned above, Korean kings and the wealthy enjoyed this dish originally, so of course it was developed in Seoul.
Seoul style Bulgogi is sweet and has a little bit of water with vegetables. Other cities copied the recipe and developed their own style of Bulgogi. Once Bulgogi is served, people grill it on brass plate. While heating it up, you can't wait to taste it, because of the delicious smell. After having the main dish, you could mix rice with the broth.
Gwangyang style bulgogi is thinner than Seoul style. The taste is obviously different from other cities's Bulgogi, because of its special sauce and special charcoal. Gwangyang charcoal was well known since 1700, so it was given as an offering to the Kings regularly to make Bulgogi.
Seoul and Gwangyang have been arguing to decide which one is better. Even though I tried both, I can not even tell which is better. Give both a try and let me know what you think.
