바이든의 최애 영시 들여다보기
셰이머스 히니 <트로이에서의 해결책>
미국의 전현직 대통령인 조 바이든과 버락 오바마가 즐겨 인용하는 아일랜드의 시인 셰이머스 히니의 시 <트로이에서의 해결책>은 다음 구절로 유명하다.
"역사는 무덤가에서 희망을 갖지 말라고 가르치네. 그러나 일생에 단 한 번, 간절히 기다리던 정의의 파도가 솟구칠 수 있다면, 역사와 희망은 함께 노래하리" 이 구절은 실제로 버락 오바마 미국 전 대통령이 한국을 찾았을 때 연설 중에 인용한 바 있다.
셰이머스 히니는 자연주의 시인이다. 그러나 자연을 숭앙하는 대상으로만 바라본게 아니라 때로는 인간에게 가혹한 시련을 내리는 극복해야 할 대상으로 보고 있다. 아일랜드의 넉넉지 않은 집안에서 자란 히니는 아버지의 농사일을 거들곤 했다고 한다. 히니의 시 전체에 흐르는 정서는 불굴의 의지로 일어나되 원망하지 말라는 단단함이다.
조 바이든 미국 대통령은 슬픈 가정사로 유명하다. 최연소 상원의원으로 정계에 화려하게 발을 들여놨지만 사고로 첫번째 부인을 잃고, 아끼던 장남도 병으로 잃었다. 운명이나 자연은 인간이 어찌할 수 없는 큰 흐름의 상징으로 자주 활용된다. 역시 아일랜드계인 그가 히니의 시를 가장 좋아하는 것은 우연이 아닐 것이다. 다음은 시의 전문이다. 쉬운 표현으로 굳센 정서를 노래하고 읽는이가 괴로워하고 있다면 일어서서 떨치고 나아갈 것을 독려하고 있는 시다.
THE CURE OF TROY
Human beings suffer
They torture one another,
They get hurt and get hard.
No poem or play or song
Can fully right a wrong
Inflicted and endured.
The innocent in gaols
Beat on their bars together.
A hunger-striker’s father
Stands in the graveyard dumb.
The police widow in veils
Faints at the funeral home.
History says, Don’t hope
On this side of the grave…
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.
So hope for a great sea-change
On the far side of revenge.
Believe that a further shore
Is reachable from here.
Believe in miracles
And cures and healing wells.
Call miracle self-healing:
The utter, self-revealing
Double-take of feeling.
If there’s fire on the mountain
Or lightning and storm
And a god speaks from the sky
That means someone is hearing
The outcry and the birth-cry
Of new life at its term.
It means once in a lifetime
That justice can rise up
And hope and history rhyme.
