Los Angeles Unified is dedicated to protecting access to public education for all District students – and every child in our communities. In fact, it is a constitutional right that every child has access to an education. As we close out one of the most challenging weeks in our District’s history, and prepare for a new presidential administration, we want to assure you that the District will continue supporting childrens’ rights to a free public education and protecting student education records. We welcome all students in Los Angeles Unified schools. No exceptions. Every District site will be a place of support and resources for all students, families, and employees regardless of immigration status and any other protected groups, which is in alignment with the District’s Nondiscrimination Policy.
Please know that California state law and Los Angeles Unified policy prohibit District officials from inquiring about citizenship status. Accordingly, we will not ask for this information, share this information, or provide any agency or authority with this information.
Beginning next week, our teams will distribute Red Cards with information about your rights, as well as resources and support regarding these rights. We are also finalizing a We are One Resource Guide that will be available in different languages at lausd.org/weareone starting next week. We have begun to host “Know Your Rights” and “Rooted in Resilience” workshops and other informational sessions for our school community in partnership with non-profit organizations to share resources related to your rights.
