front of you all. My name is Ryu Soo-young and I'm an actor, but
I'm here to speak about Korean cuisine. An actor talking about Korean
food? Can you believe it? At first, you know, I felf a little but
awkward 좀 어색했다 when I got the invitation from Standford University because I
have 26 years acting experiences in over 40 drama series and films yet
I have invited here as a chef.
2:03:57 Actually it's still strange for me that people think of me as a
chef because I think of myself first as an actor. But until only two
years ago my lovely daughter thought I was a chef because most of
my drama and movies are not suitable for children under five years
old but she can watch only my cooking show....
2:15:32.... I received an offer to appear on cooking show but I
hesitated at first because I thought why would I 내가 왜 want my hobby to
become a job? When something becomes a job, it can lose its fun.
That's true. But I was told that the prize money from winning at this
cooking show would be donated to underprivileged 소외된 children so I
decided to participate.
2:16:05 I showcased my usual homecooked meals using my home
kitchen as a stage even now my cooking show is filmed in my small
kitchen. But my hobby and profession were different. Cooking and
teaching how to cook were different. I have to measure everything
precisely and I focused on every detail 세심하게 신경 썼다 so that even those who
couldn't cook could follow alone.
2:16:38 My very first dish was Kamjatang. It's a pork backbone stew, a
very popular stew in Korea. In restaurant it can cost about $10 per
serving, but I realized that with $10 I could buy seven pounds of pork
backbone and make enough Kamjatang for my whole family and my
neighbors. It means I can even hold garden party with $10. From the
first broadcast the response was more enthusiastic than anyone expected.
2:17:34 People love my recipe because I made a decent
homecooked meal with simple ingredients at an affordable price. But I
guess the most important thing was that all is happened during the
year of covid-19. People couldn't go to restaurants and they were
getting sick of 질리게 되었다 their options that were very expensive.
Also many companies started remote work so people had to cook at home.
2:18:04 If they didn't know how to cook they would have to make
frozen meals or instant noodle or something. I think that eating well
was more challenging than social distancing. So people started
cooking and they needed recipes. They weren't looking for fancy
dishes for Paris but real practical recipe for daily life.
I continued to create and refine recipes simplifying cooking method.
I excluded premium ingredients and made maximum use of seasonal
produce because they are the cheapest during the season. Health
benefits were just a bonus. I was especially eager to target men who
weren't comfortable cooking. Nowadays being able to cook well is
essential even for men.
2:20:33... Teaching cooking and sharing it with people is greatest joy in
my life. I love encouraging young people to start cooking Korean food
easily and helping retired couples make a real food instead of frozen
meals with simple recipe and affordable price. It's the most meaningful
thing in my life. When I walk down the street, people sometimes come
up to me 내게 다가와 and tell me that you gave me a great dinner last night even
though I didn't do anything for them.,,,
2:21:14. Acting and cooking are quite similar to me in preparing, presenting and finding meaning in people's reaction. Lastly, there is a phrase I really like to wrap up today's talk 오늘 강연을 마무리하고 싶은. Sometimes ago I heard a phrase that goes like this, "I read a book on my bookshelf and now I'm no longer the same person". I changed this phrase like this, "I
took out a frying pan from my kitchen and now I'm no longer the same person. Let's keep cooking! Thank you
