U.S. Indexes Hit New Records as Inflation and Jobless Claims Rise (WSJ. 20250911)

US stocks rose to record highs today as the latest inflation data reinforced investor expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 46,000 for the first time, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also finished at all-time highs. A government report showed consumer prices rose in August, and separate data revealed weekly jobless claims reached their highest level since 2021. Elsewhere, 10-year Treasury yields briefly fell below 4% for the first time since early April, and oil prices declined. Among individual companies, shares of Warner Bros. Discovery surged by 29%. After we exclusively reported that Paramount Skydance is preparing a bid for the company, Paramount stock jumped 15.5%. The online housing platform, Opendoor saw its stock soar by 79% after naming a new chief executive. Pharmaceutical company, AbbVie's stock jumped to an all-time high after it struck a deal to delay generic competition for its key drug. It closed the day up 4%, and shares of Centene gained 9% after the healthcare company affirmed its 2025 earnings guidance.
