Archetypal Literary Criticism
Did you ever felt the feeling that you might know the story's ending? Like you read about it previously several times? Carl Gustav Jung, who was a psychiatrist, must have experienced this many times. He built this theory called Archetypal Literary Criticism. Archetypal Literary Criticism is a myth and archetypes in the narrative, symbols, images, and character types in literary works out of group unconscious. Like a dream, which is the personal unconscious, people have images imprinted in their minds, and group unconscious is the images, symbols, narrative, and character types that are imprinted in many people's minds.
In this lecture, the class is finding out examples in the literature of a fool character type.

- Unferth: servant of the Danish lord Hrothgar in the Old English epic poem Beowulf
- Mary(= happy)&Pippin: Sidekicks of Frodo in the Lord of the Rings
- Neville Longbottom(= Big bottom): character in the Harry Potter series who always forgets things
- Mad Hatter & the March Hare
: Mad Hatter has historical background-based satire. In the 1800s Hatters(who makes hats) used Mercury to shine hats and they didn't use gloves, they used their bare hands, Mercury is poisonous, so it caused insanity.
: "Mad as a March hare" is an English idiomatic phrase. This phrase is made because, in the March breeding season, hare acts crazy.
- Peter Pettigrew: Voldmort's sidekick in the Harry Potter series
- Mercutio & Nurse: In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is a friend of Romeo who doesn't take life seriously and Nurse is a nanny, kind of a servant of Juliet's family, but she gives advice to Juliet.

- Jar Jar: In StarWars, he causes many problems, but he has his luck, walking alive through the rain of bullets. And become an ambassador.
- Forest & Bubba: Both are fools, but do important things like saving people's lives and building a big shrimp company
- Abu: Do silly things like stealing, but encourages Aladin to meet Jasmine
- Homer Simpson: Shares wisdom with children, but isn't taken seriously by others. His name Homer has irony. Homer is the one who wrote Odysseus, one of the best poets, but Homer Simpson is simple.
