신윤복, <쌍륙삼매>, 조선 후기열세 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <쌍륙삼매>입니다.
언덕 아래의 산자락에서 유생과 벼슬을 하지 않은 남자가 기생들을 데리고 나와 함께 쌍륙(雙六) 놀이를 즐기고 있는 모습입니다. 조선후기의 경제력 성장으로 여유를 갖게 되자 나라안에 도박과 게임중독이 성행하게 됩니다. 결국, 국가에서 나서서 제지할 정도로 심각한 사회문제가 되었다고 하는데요... 쌍륙은 서양의 체스와 견주어지는 두 편으로 팀을 나누어 주사위를 던져 말을 옮겨가며 하는 보드게임이라 할 수 있습니다. 당시 투전이나 골패는 남성들의 투기성을 띤 방탕한 노름이라 한다면 쌍륙은 그에 비한다면 도박성이 약한 부녀자들의 게임으로 볼 수도 있겠습니다... 그러나 이 기사를 참조해 보면 그 심각성이 가볍지만은 않은 듯합니다. 쌍륙삼매경에 빠져 공주가 병이나도 뒷전이었고 심지어 이 놀이를 하다 싸움으로 번져 궁에 불을 낸 자도 있었다고 하네요... 신윤복 그림의 등장인물들이 왜 이리 열중했는지 알 수 있는 일화들이라 흥미롭습니다.
The thirteenth work I'd like to introduce is "Ssangryuksammae". It depicts a scene where two men and two courtesans below the hill are seen enjoying the Ssangryuk game. With the economic growth in the later years of the Joseon Dynasty, there was a rise in leisure activities, leading to the prevalence of gambling and gaming addiction. Eventually, it became such a serious social issue that the government had to intervene.
Ssangryuk can be compared to the Western chess, as it is a board game where teams throw dice and move pieces. While traditional gambling and board games often reflected the competitive nature of men, Ssangryuk might be seen as a game with a weaker gambling aspect played by women. However, referring to this article, it seems that the severity of the issue shouldn't be taken lightly. People were so engrossed in the game that even a princess fell ill due to her involvement, and there were instances where fights broke out during the game, leading to fires in the palace. Understanding these anecdotes involving characters in Shin Yun-bok's paintings adds an interesting layer to the narrative.
