As I delved into the original text for my project, I was fortunate enough to come across an out-of-print copy of the 《Hyeowonjeonshincheop》 at the Seoul National University's library. This exclusive reprint by Tamgudang is enclosed in a distinctive cross-shaped case, featuring titles and brief commentaries for all 30 paintings in both Korean and English. Despite lingering uncertainties about the source of the four-character titles assigned to each painting and the overall order of the works, researchers continue to use these titles for identification. Inconsistencies with the titles have been noted after analyzing the paintings, but they remain in common usage.
Having crafted silkscreened artist books since 2008, my typical choice for hardcovers involves an accordion-style binding. However, for this particular project, I opted to emulate the shape of the Tamgudang reprint as closely as possible, injecting a touch of modern flair.

The completed artist's book is as described above. Although I initially attempted to make it leisurely by acquiring all the materials in advance, inevitable trial and error arose due to the unfamiliarity with this particular format. In a twist of fate, just before the final defense and with only a few days left for exhibition preparation, a public holiday threw a wrench into my plans. Despite these challenges, reminiscent of a last-minute scramble, I managed to resource all the materials I needed and concluded the last cover task in a thrilling manner.
I vividly recall the day, with the final defense looming and the exhibition just around the corner, meeting everyone involved left a lasting positive impression in my memory. I am grateful to all those I encountered that day.
The research that began in late 2021 finally concluded in August 2023. The reason for documenting this project is that it occupies a significant portion of one's life, and I've experienced the disappointment of a project, which holds substantial personal importance, ending with just a single upload of the completed work.
Considering the nature of my major, which involves researching both papers and artworks, I approached this with the intention of surpassing the limits of my abilities thus far. The process of studying and reinterpreting the work of the great artist Shin Yun-bok was challenging, but it became a meaningful period in my life.
I hope that through this research, I've been able to demonstrate that illustration in Korea can be globally significant, not just in Japan and China. I express my gratitude to everyone who took the time to appreciate the 15 artworks, the artist's book, and the exhibition, and I hope to greet you with even better works in the future. :)
