하루에 조금씩, 브랜다와 함께 읽는 Alice in Wonderland

    'Well!' thought Alice to herself. 'After such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling downstairs! How brave they'll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!'[Which was very likely true.]

‘오!’ 앨리스는 속으로 생각했다(think to oneself 마음속으로 생각하다). ‘이렇게 떨어지고 보니, 계단 아래로 굴러 떨어지는 것은 아무것도 아니라고 생각하겠군!(think nothing of~는 경시하다, 아무렇지 않게 여기다) 집에선 모두 나를 정말 용감하게 생각할꺼야! 집 꼭대기에서 떨어지더라도 뭐라 할 수 없겠는걸!’(even if 일지라도)[그것은 매우 그럴싸한 사실이었다.] (be likely 개연성이 있다.)

 

    Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? 'I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time?' she said aloud. 'I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think -' [for, you see, Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in the schoolroom, and though this was not a very good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, as there was no one to listen to her, still it was good practice to say it over] '- yes, that's about the right distance - but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I've got to?' [Alice had no idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.]

아래, 점점 더 아래로. 과연 추락은 끝이 나지 않을 것인가? ‘이 시간까지 내가 얼마나 많은 마일을 떨어졌는지 궁금하군?’(mile은 영국에서 쓰는 거리 단위인데, 1mile=1.609km가 된다.) 그녀는 소리내어 말했다. ‘나는 지구의 중심 근처 어딘가에 도달한 게 틀림없어(중심 centre는 center와 같은 뜻으로 영국식 표현이다). 좀 보자. 내가 생각하기로 4천 마일 아래 일거야.’ [앨리스는 학교 수업에서 이런 종류의 레슨 몇몇을 배워왔다. 비록 그녀를 듣고 있는 사람이 없으니까 이 시간이 그녀의 지식을 뽐내는 좋은 기회는 아니지만, 하지만 여전히 그것을 반복해서 말하는 것은 좋은 연습이었다](say over 되풀이해서 말하다, 외다) ‘맞아, 그게 대략 알맞은 거리야. 하지만 내가 도달한 위도와 경도가 어떻게 되는지 궁금하군?’ [앨리스는 무엇이 위도인지 혹은 무엇이 경도인지 알지 못했다. 하지만 그들은 말하기에 멋진, 폼나는 단어들이라고 생각했다.]
