1. 작가 소개 : 루이스 캐럴 (Louis Carroll 1832-1898) : 본명은 Charles Ludwidge Dodgson (찰스 루트위지 도지슨), 영국 체셔 지방의 성직자 집안 출생, 어린 시절부터 체스, 인형극, 말장난 등에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 옥스퍼드 대학 수학부 교수로 일하던 중 핸리 리들이라는 새로운 학장의 딸들과 우정을 쌓게 된다. 앨리스는 그 자매들 중 하나인데, 1862년 그의 일기를 보면, 앨리스 자매들과 템즈 강변에서 보트를 타고 놀면서 '앨리스 이야기'지어내 들려줬다고 나온다. 앨리스는 집에 오는 길에 캐럴에게 ' 그것을 책으로 써주시면 정말 재미있을 거예요"라고 말했다고 한다. 이렇게 만들어진 이야기의 첫 제목은 [ 앨리스의 땅속 모험]이었다. 이후 1865년 John Tenniel(1820-1914)가 그림을 그리며 맥밀런 출판사가 책을 출판했다. 1871년에는 속편, [거울나라의 앨리스]가 출판되었다.

왜냐하면, 그 질문들이 아주 평이한 것들이라고 해도 몇 가지 적어둬야 할 노트들을 만들어 내고, 그 수수께끼는 절대 잘못된 결말을 미리 보여주지 않기 때문이다.

Chapter 1. Down the Rabbit- hole
sitting on the bank 17. worth : 형용사 / 전치사처럼 쓰여 그 뒤에 명사구가 온다 / ~의 가치가 있는.
So she was considering in her own mind whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. 앨리스는 그래서 마음속으로 생각하기를, 데이지꽃 체인 만드는것이 일어나서 데이지꽃을 따서 말썽을 피우는 것보다 나을지 생각했는데, 그순간 분홍색 눈의 흰 토끼가 앨리스 곁을 뛰어갔다.
18. start to one's feet : 갑자기 일어서다
~ but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.
19. in another moment : 다음 순간, 홀연
In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.
- After it, Alice went down in another moment 이 원래 어순이다. 시간 부사구가 선행하면 뒤에 이어오는 주어 동사의 순서, Alice went down => down went Alice로 도치됨
20. either A or B 구문에서 A와 B 자리에 문장이 오는 경우
Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of thime as she went down to look about her, and to wonder what was going to happen next.

25. be of little use : 별로 유용하지가 않다. 쓸모가 없다.

26. out-of -the- way : 이상한
- For, you see, so many out- of- the- way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.
27. disagree with someone : ~에 동의하지 않다, 어떤 음식이 ~에게 나쁜 영향을 미치다. make them feel bad or sick.
-if you drink much from a bottle marked 'poison', it is almost certain to disagree with you, sooner or later.
28 fancy : ~를 원하다. ~를 하고 싶다.
- for it might end in my going out altogether, like a candle. I wonder what I should be like then? And she tried to fancy what the flame of a candle is like after it is blown out, for she could not remember ever having seen such a thing.
29. box somebody's ears : ~의 따귀를 갈기다
30. pretending to be two people : 두사람인것 처럼 행동하기
once she remembered trying to box her own ears for having cheated herself in a game of croquet she was playing against herself, for this curious child was very fond of pretending to be two people.
31. currant : 건포도
- EAT ME were beautifully marked in currants. " Well I'll eat it, and if it makes me larger, I can rach the key and if it makes me smaller, I can creep under the door, so either way I'll get into the garden, and I don't care which happens.
She ate a little bit, and said anxiously to herself, 'Which was? Which way? holding her hand on the top of her head to feel which way it was growing and she was quite surprise to find that she remained the same size : to be sure, this generally happens when one eats cake, but Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way. So she set to work , and very soon finished off the cake.
앨리스는 케이크를 조금만 먹고 걱정스레 어느쪽, 어느쪽이라고 혼잣말을 하면서 머리에 손을 대고 어느 방향으로 자랄지 느끼려는데, 그만 똑같은 크기로 머물러있자 깜짝 놀랐다. 하긴, 이런 일은 누구나 케이크를 먹을때마다 멀어지는 일이지만, 앨리스는 뭔가 다른 특별한 일이 일어날거라는 기대에 너무 집착했다. 그것은 인생을 보통의 길로 지나가도록 만들기에 얼마나 바보같고 어리석은 일인지 모른다. 그래서 앨리스는 다시 열심히 케이크를 먹고 곧 다 먹어치워버렸다.
