Chapter 4. The rabbit sends in a little bill
1. as sure as ferret : 물어보다 마나 확실한 ; ferret은 루이스가 살던 시대 일반적으로 기르던 가축domestic animals였는데, 주로 rodents나 rabbits를 잡는데 쓰였다. executed 될거라는 걱정과 연관지어서 ferrets이 White rabbit을 잡아먹으니, 처형될 것이라는 의미를 빗대서 쓴것으로 보인다는 의견.
Oh my fur and whiskers ! She will get me executed, as sure as ferrets are ferrets ! 아 내 털과 콧수염 ! 그녀는 나를 처형할거야, 확실해.
2. hunt about : 어떤 찾기 힘든 물건을 물색, 추적하다 찾다.
3. lest : 하지 않도록, ~할까봐
She went in without knocking, and hurried upstairs, in great fear lest she should mee the real Mary Ann ,and be turned out of the house before she had found the fan and gloves . 앨리스는 부채랑 장갑을 찾기도 전에 진짜 메리 안을 만나서 그 집에서 쫒겨날까 엄청 겁에 질려서는, 노크없이 급히 윗층으로 올라갔다.
4. go messages ; go on a message: do a message, run a message : 심부름을 가다
5. fancy : [타동사] ~를 원하다, ~에 끌리다.
And she began fancying the sort of thing that would happen. 그러자 앨리스는 앞으로 일어날 일에 끌리기 시작했다.
I know something interesting is sure to happen, she said to herself, ' whatever I eat or drink anything; so I'll just see what this bottle does. I do hope it'll make me grow large again, for really I'm quite tired of being such a tiny little thing ! 난 뭔가 재미있는 일이 벌어질것 같아, 뭐든 먹거나 마시면, 그래서 난 이 병이 하게될일을 보게 될거야. 나는 다시 커졌으면, 이렇게 작은건 너무 지긋지긋해
6. as a last resource : 최후의 방책으로
Still she went on growing, and, as a last resource, she put one arm out of the window, and one foot up in the chimney and said to herself. 앨리스는 계속 자라고 있었다, 최후의 방책으로 그녀는 한 팔을 창문밖으로 내밀었고 한 다리는 굴뚝쪽으로 올리고, 혼잣말을 했다.
Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger : still it was very uncomfortable, and , as there seemed to be no sort of chance of her ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she felt unhappy. 다행히도 그 작은 병은 효과가 좋았는지 더이상 커지지 않았다지만 여전히 불편했다. 그리고 방에서 다시 나갈 방도가 없어 보였지만 불행하게 느껴지지 않는다는게 놀랄일은 아니었다.
I almost wish I hadn't gone down that rabbit-hole- and yet- and yet- it's rather curious, you know, this sort of life ! I do wonder what can have happened to me ! When I used to read fiary tales, I fancied that kind of thing never happened, and now here I am in the middle of one. There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought ! And when I grow up, I'll write one- but I'm grown up now,' she added in a sorrowful tone; ' at least there's no room to grow up any more here.' 내가 토끼굴에 빠지지 말았을 걸, 근데 궁금해 사실, 이런 인생이 ! 나에게 어떤이이 벌어질지 궁금해 ! 나는 동화책을 읽으면 안벌어질것 같은 일에 끌렸어, 그런데 나는 지금 그런 일들의 한가운데 와있잖아. 나에 대한 책을 써야해 반드시 . 그리고 내가 크면 나도 그런책을 쓸거야, 근데 난 지금 컸잖아 앨리스는 우울한 목소리로 바꿨다. 여긴 적어도 더 자랄 공간조차 없어.
'But then, ' thought ALICE, 'shall I never get any older than I am now? That's be a comfort, one way - never be an old woman- but then- always to have lessons to lear ! Oh, I shouldn't like that !' 근데 그렇게 되면 나는 지금보다 더 늙는것 아니잖아 그거 좋다 한편으로는 난 절대 늙은 여자가 되지 않을거니까, 그런데 그렇게되면 맨날 뭔가 교훈을 배워야하잖아. 그건 너무 싫어 !
7. for all that : ~ 에도 불구하고
Pat, Pat where are you ? And then a voice she had never heard before, 'Sure then I 'm here !' Digging for apples, yer honour !" .............'Now tell me, Pat, what's that in the wondow?' 'Sure it's arm, yer honour ! ( He pronouced it 'arrum') 'An arm, you goose! Who ever saw that size? Why, it fills the whole window!" "Sure it does, yer hounor : but it's an arm for all that .' 팻팻 어딨는 거냐, 그러더니 지금까지 한번도 못들어본 목소리가 들렷다. ' 네 저 여기있어요, 사과를 캐고 있어요 주인님!' ......' 팻, 말해봐 저 창문에 저거 뭐냐?" " 네 그건 팔입니다. 주인님 ( 팔을 '파알'이라고 발음했다) ' 팔이라고 이 바부같은 놈아, 저런 크기를 봤냐? 왜 창문 전체를 덮고 있는거냐 " " 네 그렇습니다. 주인님 그래도 그건 팔이에요"
8. cucumber frame : 오이 덩굴을 키우는 프레임
she suddenly spread out her hands and made a snatch in the air : 앨리스는 손을 뻗어 허공을 휘저었다 9 .fluster : 허둥지둥하게 만들다. : fluster oneself : 정신못차리다.
I am better now- but I'm a deal too flustered to tell you - all I know is, something comes at me like a Jack- in - the- box, and up I goes like a sky-rocket ! 이제 좀 괜찮아 졌어요. 너무 정신이 없어서 말도 안나오네요. 내가 아는건 뭔가가 잭인더박스처럼 나한테 다가오더니 내가 로케트처럼 날라갔가는 거에요.

11. put a stop to something: ~를 멈추다
- I'll put a stop to this she said to herself, and shouted out, 'You'd better not do that again !which produced another dead silence.
Alice noticed with some surprised that the pebbles were all turning into little cakes as they lay on the floor, and a bright idea came into her head. If I eat one of these cakes, she thought, it's sure to make some changes in my size...........So she swallowed one of the cakes and was delighted to find that she began shringking directly. 앨리스는 놀랍게도 그 자갈들이 갑자기 작은 케익들로 바뀌고 바닥을 굴러다니는걸 보게된다. 그리고 반짝이는 아이디어가 생각났다. 내가 이 케익들중 하나를 먹으면 내 크기가 분명 달라질거야......앨리스는 케익하나를 삼켰고 즉시 몸이 줄어드는 걸 보고 뛸듯이 기뻤다.

~ then the puppy began a series of short charges at the stick, running a very little way forwards each time and a long way back~ 그러더니 강아지는 막대기를 향해 여러번 짧은 습격을 하면서 앞으로 오다가 뒤로 가다가 했다.
19. buttercup: 미나리 아제비
she leant against a buttercup to rest herself, and fanned herself with one of the leaves. 20. peep over : 들여다 보다 : 주로 어떤 edge, a brink, one's shouler, the bushes: 넘어로 들여다 보다.
I ought to eat or drink something or other but the great question is, what ?......She stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peeped over the edge of the mushroom, and her eyes immediately met those of a large blue caterpillar, that was sittine on the top with its arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah, and taking not the smallest notices of her or of anything else. 난 뭔가를 먹거나 마셔야 하는데 근데 젤 큰 의문점은 그게 무엇이야는 거야. .....앨리스는 발끝으로 한껏 몸을 늘려서 버섯의 가장가리 넘어로 들여다 보다가 갑자기 눈에 비친 커다란 푸른 애벌레를 맞딱뜨리게 되었다. 팔짱을 끼고는 기다란 물담배를 피우며 앨리스든 뭐든 아무리 작은 표시도 개의치 않은채 버섯위에 앉아있었다.
