Chapter 6. Pig and pepper
1. livery : 하인이 입던 제복

- their curls got entangled together
The Fish-Footman began by producing from under his arm a great letter, nearly as large as himself,....... "For the Duchess, An invitation from the Queen to play croquet' The Frog-Footman repeated in the same solemn tone, only changing the order of the words a little. 물고기 하인이 팔밑에서 자기 몸만큼 커다란 편지를 꺼내면서 시작했다. " 공작부인에게, 왕비로부터 크로켓 경기를 함께 하자는 초대장" 개구리 하인은 엄숙한 목소리로 같은 말을 순서만 조금 바꿔서 되풀이해서 읽었다.
6. uncivil ;정중하지 못한
He was looking up into the sky all the time he was speaking , and this Alice thought decidedly uncivil. But perhaps he can't help it, she said to herself ; his eyes are so very nearly at the top of his head........How am I to get in ? she repeated aloud. ' I shall sit here,' the Footman remarked, 'till tomorrow ' 그는 말하는 내내 하늘만 쳐다보고 있었고, 앨리스는 단호히 이건 무례한 짓이라고 생각했다. 하지만 그도 어쩔수 없었겠지, 눈히 너렇게 머리 꼭대기에 붙어 있으니,,앨리스는 혼자 중얼거렸다. ' 어떻게 들어가냐구 ' 더 큰소리로 되풀이 했다. ' 난 여기에 내일까지 앉아 있을거야' 하인은 이렇게 말했다.
7. skim : ~를 스치며 지나가다
8. graze: 피부를 까지게 하다. 긁히게 하다. : I fell and grazed my knee.
9. cauldron: 거대한 가마솥
The door led right into a large kitchen, which was full of smoke from one end to the other : the Duchess was sitting on a three-legged stoll on the middle, nursing a baby: the cook was leaning over the fire, stirring a large cauldron which seemed to be full of soup. 'There's certaily too much pepper in the soup " Alice said to herself, as well as she could for sneezing. 문은 바로 부엌으로 나 있었는데 온통 이쪽끝에서 저쪽끝까지 연기로 자욱했다. 공작부인은 가운데 세개의 다리가 달린 스톨에서 아기를 달래며 앉아 있었고, 요리사는 불쪽으로 몸을 기울여 스프가 가득한 가마솥을 젓고 있었다. "스프에 후추가 너무 많이 들어간것 같은데'' 앨리스가 재채기라고 할듯 혼잣말을 했다.
Even the Duchess sneeze occaisonally, and the bay was sneezing and howling alternatively10. grinning from ear to ear
- The only things in the kitchen that did not sneeze were the cook and a lrge cat which was sitting on the hearth and grinning from ear to ear. It's a Cheshire cat, and that's why. Pig!"..... the last word with such sudden violence that Alice quite jumped 부엌에서 재채기를 하지않는 존재는 요리사와 벽난로앞에 앉아서 양쪽 귀까지 웃고 있는 큰 고양이었다. ' 체셔고양이에요, 그리고 그래서 니가 '돼지다 이놈아' ...마지막 말은 너무 폭력적이어서 앨리스가 화들짝 튀어오를 정도였다.
11. in an agony of terror : 너무나도 두려워서 <=> in an agony of joy: 너무나도 기뻐서
Oh please mind what you're doing ! cried Alice jumping up and down in an agony of terror.
If everybody minded their own business, ...the world would go round a deal faster that it does. ....Which would not be an advantage ...Just think what work it would make with the day and night ! You see the earth takes twenty -four hourse to tur round on its axes....Talking to axes....chop off her head ! 만일 모두가 자신의 일에만 신경을 쓴다면,,,,세상은 지금보다 더 빠르게 돌아갈수 있을텐데...." 그게 좋은게 아닐수도 있어요, 생각해보세요 그게 밤과 낮을 만드는거에요. 지구가 24간동안 축(axes) 을 중심으로 돈다는걸 아시죠 ?" 도끼(axis) 이야기를 하다니, 목을 쳐라 !
12. abide ; 참다 견디다
- Oh don't bother me. I never could abide figures ! : 귀찮게 하지마라, 난 숫자를 못참아!
13. Speak roughly to your little boy : 루이스의 패러디 자장가이다. 아래 원문 자장가에서 부사나 형용사를 다르게 써서 재미있게 패러디 했다.

and beat him when he sneeze,
he only does it to annoy,
because he knows it tease.

14. snort : 코웃음을 치다, 킁킁 거리다.
15. grunt : 꿀꿀소리를 내다
If you're going to turn into a pig, my dear, I'll have nothing more to do with you. .....Don't grunt, that's not at all a proper way of expressing yourself......If it had grown up, it would have made a dreadfully ugly child, but it makes rather a handsome pig.
아가야, 네가 돼지로 변한다면 내가 너에게 이제 해줄게 없어.....꿀꿀거리지마 그건 너를 표현하는 적당한 방식이 아니야.
Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to fo from here? " That depends a good deal on where you want to get to, said the cat. 'I don't much care where..' said Alice. 'Then it doesn't matter which way you go' said the cat. ' so long as I get somewhere' Alice added as an explanation.
내가 어디로 가야할지 혹시 말해줄수 있나요? " 그건 네가 어디로 가고 싶은가에 달려있어" 고양이가 말했다. " 난 어디로가든 신경쓰지 않아요" 앨리스가 답했다. ' 그럼 네가 어디로 가든 상관없는거야" 고양이가 말했다. ' 내가 어딘가에 도착할수 있다면' 앨리스는 설명을 덧붙였다.
In that direction, lives a Hatter, and in that direction lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.' ' But I don't want to go among mad people,' ' Oh you can't help that, we're all and here. I'm mad and You're mad. ' 'How do you know I'm mad?' 'You must be, or you wouldn't have come here'
저쪽으로 가면 해터가 살고 , 저쪽으로 가면 삼월의 토끼가 살아. 둘중 한곳에 맘에 드는 곳을 방문해봐, 둘다 미쳤으니까. ' 하지만 난 미친 사람들 사이에 사고 싶진 않아요' ' 오 그래? 어쩔수 없을꺼? 우리는 모두 미쳤으니까 나도 너도" " 내가 미친지 어떻게 알아요?" " 넌 분명히 미쳤어, 그게 아니라면 여기 오지도 않았을 거야"
16. growl : 강아지가 으르렁거리다
17. purr : 고양이가 가르릉 거리다.
~ you see a dog growls when it's angry and wags its tail when it's pleased.Now I growl when I'm pleased and wag my tail when I', angry. Therefore I'm mad.
개가 화나면 으르릉거리고 좋으면 꼬리를 흔들잖아. 근데 나는 좋으면 으르릉대고, 화나면 꼬리를 흔들거든. 그러니까 내가 미쳤지.
18. raving : 발광한, 대단한 The man is a raving lunatic :그남자는 발광한 미치광이다. she is no raving beauty : 그녀는 대단한 미인은 아니다.
..the March Hare will be much the most interesting and perhaps this is May, it won't be raving mad- at least not so mad as it was in March . 삼월의 토끼는 아주 재미있을 거 같아. 아마 지금이 5월이니까 그렇게 발광한 미치광이는 아니겠지 - 적어도 3월이니까 말야.
19. giddy : 어지러운, 들뜬 when looking down from the top floor, I felt giddy.
Well I've often seen a cat without a grin, bit a grin without a cat ! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life !
웃지 않는 고양이는 자주 봤는데, 고양이 없는 웃음은 처음이야. 정말 내가 살면서 본것들중에 최고로 이상한거야 !
챕터 6 감상 : 몸의 크기가 원래대로 돌아온 앨리스는 체셔캣을 만나 어디로 갈지 묻는다. 어디로 갈지에 대한 답변은 누구도 줄수 없다. 앨리스처럼 어딘가에 도착하는것이 목표라고 하는 것이 그나마 옳은 선택이다. 뜨거운 스프가 담긴 접시를 던져대도, 우는 아이를 때리고 후추를 먹어도, 아이가 돼지로 변해도 이상한 나라에서는 모든 것이 평범하다. 채셔캣이 앨리스에게 권했던 목적지도 두명의 미치광이가 있는 집이다. 미치광이가 싫다니, 우리 모두가 미치광이인데. 맞는 말이다. 미쳐도 이상할 것이 없으니 아이러니 하게도 마음이 편안해진다. 내가 무언가 실수를 하거나, 그래서 비난을 받아도 '뭐 어때' 라는 마인드를 가지라는 메시지를 받게 된다. 귀까지 찢어지게 웃는 고양이 체셔캣은 웃음만 남기고 사라지기도 하고 다시 모습을 드러내기도 한다. 채셔켓의 웃음은 정해진 대상에 대해 뿜어내는 감정의 표현이 아니라, 용기를 북돋는 웃음으로 여겨진다. 어렸을때 수업시간에 선생님의 부름을 받고 벌떡 일어나 발표를 해야하는 순간이었는데, 눈앞이 깜깜해지고 무섭고 두렵고 창피하고 어쩔줄 몰라할 그 순간에, 나를 향해 이빨을 드러내며 소리없는 채셔캣의 미소를 지어주던 장난꾸러기들이 있었다. 뭐 어때? 한번 야단맞고 잊어버리면 되지. 난 선생님에게 손바닥을 맞고, 뒤돌아 채셔캣처럼 씨익 하니 웃고 금새 잊어버렸다. 그러면 된다.
