The State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II
21. April. 1926- 8.Sep.2022
The piece, credited on television as the ‘Beethoven Funeral March No. 1’, was an abiding, stately work, played with poise by the military orchestra.
It was played once more in September 2022, alongside Beethoven’s Funeral March No. 2 and No. 3, and Chopin and Mendelssohn’s funeral marches, as the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth II was carried in a ceremonial procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall.
What music will be played on the organ at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral?
Before the ceremony begins, the Assistant Organist of Westminster Abbey, Matthew Jorysz, will play the following music.
The Westminster Abbey Sub-Organist, Peter Holder, will then play the following works by Edward Elgar before the Procession of Religious Representatives moves to their places in the Nave and the Sacrarium for the funeral.
Andante espressivo (Sonata in G Op.28)
Sospiri Op.70
At the end of the service, Holder will perform Fantasia in C minor BWV 562 by Johann Sebastian Bach as the coffin and procession leave the Abbey.
Johann Sebastian Bach is the composer most played during Queen Elizabeth's moving funeral today. This is the list of Bach's music for the service in Westminster Abbey and the Queen's blessing at Windsor Castle:
Fantasy in C minor, BWV 562
Adorn Yourself, O Dear Soul, BWV 654
Sheep May Safely Graze, BWV 208
Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 546
May his heavenly sounds accompany Queen Elizabeth II. to heaven.
During the committal service for Queen Elizabeth II, the Choir of St George’s Chapel will be conducted by James Vivian, Director of Music and the organ will be played by Luke Bond, Assistant Director of Music.
Some of the music in the Committal Service was composed by Sir William Henry Harris, who was the Organist of St George’s Chapel between 1933 and 1961 and is believed to have taught the then Princess Elizabeth the piano as a child.
At the end of the service, Bond will play Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor BWV 562, which was also performed at the end of Her Majesty’s funeral earlier in the day.
