2023년 5월 영국은 1953년 6월 2일 이후 70년 만에 대관식을 준비하는 분위기로 온 나라가 2000년대 이후로 있었던 Royal Wedding과 Platinum Jubilee 이후로 최고의 축제가 아닐까 싶다.
영국에서는 찰스 3세의 대관식을 축하하기 위해
Monday 8 May 2023 은 King’s Coronation
Bank Holiday로 지정하기도 하였다.
군주제(Monarchy)를 따르는 영국의 이 정통은
1066년부터 이곳 웨스트 민스터 사원에서만, 39의통치자들이 대관식을 가졌다고 하니, 그 오랜 역사와 음악과 기록으로 남을 2023년 또 하나의 한 페이지가 될 것이다.

The Coronation service Music 은 5월 6일 토요일, Westminster Abbey, 11:00 am (GMT)에서 진행될 예정이고, 첼로 연주와 음악을 좋아하는 즐 찰스왕이 예배 음악에도 관여를 했다고 하니,
그곳에서 오르간의 웅장함과 울려 퍼질 Choir와 축하하기 위한 음악가들의 연주가 기대 되는 바이다.
지난 2023년 2월 18일에 버킹엄 궁전에서 5월 6일에 있을 대관식 예배에 관한 자세한 사항을 안내하였다. 웨스트 민스터 사원에서 2000년부터 오랫동안 음악감독으로 봉직하였던 James O’Donnell (b.1961- ) 은 지난 2022년 엘리자베스 II 세의 장례식에서도 지휘하는 모습을 BBC를 통해서 볼 수 있었는데, 미국 Yale University 교수로 활동하고 있고, 그의 후임으로 오르가니스트 이자 합창 지휘자인 Andrew Nethsingha (b.1968-)가 음악감독을 되었다. Choir of Westminster Abbey와, The Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, 그리고 Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast, and from Truro Cathedral Choir의 영국 대관식에서는 최초로 14명의 소녀 성가대원도 이번 대관식에서 함께 노래하게 될 것이다.
특히, 이번 대관식에는 1560 년 엘리자베스 I 세에 의해 생겨난, The King’s Scholar of Westminster School의 44명의 소년, 소녀 합창단이 [ Vivat Rex Carolus! Vivat Rex Carolus! Vivat! Vivat! Vivat! (Or ‘Long live Queen Camilla! Long live King Charles!’)]이 노래의 도입부에 Vivat Regina Camilla!로 바꾸어 부르게 된다.

이번 대관식 예배에서 주목살 만한 점은 12개의 새로운 음악이 선보여질 것이다. 헨델과 엘가 또한 대관식을 통해 연주된 음악은 여전히 사랑받고 있는데이번 대관식을 통해 영국출신으로 잘 알려진 작곡가들과 연주자들의 곡이 웨스트민스터 사원뿐만 아니라 전 세계에서 생중계된다.
Coronation Anthem은 오페라의 유령과 캣츠를 비롯한 뮤지컬 작곡가 Andrew Lloyd Webber(b.1948-) 곡으로, Coronation March는 해리포터의 작곡가로 알려진 Patrick Doyle, 이 작곡하였고,
오르간 솔로는 Iain Farrington (b.1977-) 영연방 국가들의 전통 멜로디를 인용하여 유머러스하고 재즈스러운 멜로디를 더하여 작곡된 Voices of the World라는 제목으로 연주된다. 그리고 Sarah Class의 ‘Sacred fire’를 남아프리카 공화국 출신의 소프라노 Preety Yende 가 부른다. 이 외에도, Nigel Hess, Paul Mealor의 'Kyrie Eleison'을 웨일스 출신의 베이스 바리톤 Sir Bryn Terfal 이 대관식에서 처음, 웨일스 언어로 노래하였다. Tarik O'Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Shirley Thompson, Judith Weir, Roderick Williams와 Debbie Wiseman, 이로서 12명의 작곡가들의 곡이 위촉되었다.

William Byrd, G.F.Handel, E. Elgar, William Boyce, John Rutter에 의해 편곡된 William Walton의 Te Deum, Parry, Vaughan Williams, Sir Henry Walford Davies 그리고 웨일스 출신 작곡가 Sir Karl Jenkins의 음악도 만나게 된다.
