뿌리 깊은 증오 범죄에 대한 한인변호사 협회의 성명서
STOP ASIAN HATE
한인변호사협회에서 애틀란타 총격 사건을 통해 희생된 사람들에게 위로를 전하고, 그 끔찍한 사건을 비롯해서 참 오랫 동안 이어져 온 폭력의 원인이 되어 온 인종차별과 아시아인 혐오, 성차별에 맞서는 목소리를 내기 위한 성명서를 발표했습니다. 전문을 옮깁니다.

"SOON CHUNG PARK, HYUN JUNG GRANT, SUNCHA KIM, YONG AE YUE, DELAINA ASHLEY YAUN, PAUL ANDRE MICHELS, XIAOJIE TAN, 그리고 DAOYOU FENG을 죽음에 이르게 한 애틀랜타 총격사건 관련 선언문"
2021년 3월 16일 조지아 주 애틀랜타 지역의 아시아인들이 소유한 세 군데의 스파에서 8명의 사람들이 총에 맞아 사망했습니다. 9번째 피해자는 총에 맞은 후 병원에서 치료를 받고 있습니다. 희생자 8명 중 6명이 아시아 여성이었고, 그 중 4명이 한국인이었습니다.
On March 16, 2021, eight people were shot and killed at three Asian-owned spas in the Atlanta area in Georgia. A ninth person was shot and hospitalized. Six of those killed were Asian women, four of whom were Korean.

Our hearts go out to Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Xiaojie Tan, and Daoyou Feng, and their loved ones. We extend our hope for recovery to Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz, who was gravely injured and hospitalized. And our condolences and support go out to the Korean and Asian American community in the Atlanta area.
이번 사건과 같은 비이성적인 폭력은 작년에만 수 천 건이 보고된 아시아인들과 아시아계 미국인들에 대한 폭력 중 가장 최근의 사건일 뿐입니다. This irrational act of violence is but the latest of thousands against Asians and Asian-Americans that have been reported in just the last year. Stop AAPI Hate, a nonprofit organization that runs the Stop AAPI Hate Reporting Center, received reports of 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian discrimination from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021. 503 of those incidents were reported in 2021 alone. 11.1% of these incidents were physical assaults, meaning that hundreds of Asians and Asian-Americans have had their physical safety violated in the past year. Women have reported hate incidents 2.3 times more than men, and 70.5% of all reported incidents have occurred in spaces open to the public (businesses, public streets, and public parks). These reports have come from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Simply put, these incidents have been occurring before our eyes in every corner of the country. No place has been safe.
우리는 이번 살인 사건을 목도하며 그 충격과 슬픔을 받아들이고 이해하려 애쓰고 있지만, 아시아인들과 아시아계 미국인들에 대한 폭력은 전혀 새로운 일이 아닙니다. 작년 한 해 동안 아시아인들에 대한 인종차별이 더욱 악화되었지만, 이는 미국역사 속에 지속되어 온 아시아인을 대상으로 한 증오 범죄 중 가장 최근의 기록일 뿐입니다. 이 땅에 아시아인들이 살아온 시간만큼 반아시아 감정의 문화와 역사가 계속 이어져 왔다는 것이 현실입니다. 아시아계 여성들을 겨냥한 지난 주의 총격 사건은 이 나라의 오래되고 아무 제약 없이 이어져 온 아시아계 여성에 대한 인종차별주의, 성차별주의 및 여성혐오를 반영합니다. 이러한 살해행위들이 아시아인들을 향한 적대감이나 성차별과는 아무런 관련이 없다고 말하는 사람이 있다면, 그 사람 이야말로 아시아인들이 이 나라에서 경험한 일들과 그 역사에 대해 전적으로 무지한 사람일 것입니다.
Even as we grapple with shock and grief in response to these murders, violence against Asians and Asian-Americans is not new. The worsening racism against Asians in the past year is only the most recent wave of anti-Asian hate crimes in this country’s history. The reality is that a culture and history of anti-Asian sentiment has existed in this country for as long as Asians have lived here. The violence against mostly Asian women in last week’s shooting also reflects this country’s long and unfettered history of racism, sexism, and misogyny against Asian women in particular. Any suggestion that these murders have nothing to do with anti-Asian animus and its intersectionality with sexism reflects ignorance of this history and the lived experiences of Asians in this country.
조지아 주 애틀랜타에서의 총격 사건은 증오범죄입니다. 이 나라에서 아시아인들을 향한 증오와 이를 조장하는 모든 담론을 효과적으로 고발하고, 비난하고, 해체하기 위해, 우리는 인종차별주의자들과 성별에 기인한 폭력의 실상을 분명히 인지하고 이해해야 합니다.
The shootings in Atlanta, Georgia are hate crimes. We must recognize racist and gender-based violence for what it is to effectively call out, denounce, and dismantle anti-Asian hate and rhetoric.
