1. 크리스마스는 12월 25일이 아니다.
예수 그리스도의 탄생이 12월 25일에 있었다는 증거는 없습니다.

그럼 왜 이 날짜에 크리스마스를 기념할까요? 브리태니커 백과사전에서는 4 AD경, the Roman Catholic '지도자들'이 동지 (winter solstice) 시기에 “'정복되지 않는 태양의 생일'을 기념하는 이교 로마 축제와 일치하기 위해” 그것을 선택했을 것이라는 것이 가장 합리적인 추론입니다. 아메리카나 백과사전(Encyclopedia Americana)에 따르면, 많은 학자들은 이것이 “이교 개종자들에게 기독교를 더 의미 있게 만들기 위해” 그렇게 한 것이라고 믿습니다. 더 많은 사람들을 캐톨릭으로 이끌기 위해, 이교도의 풍습까지 받아들였다는 것이지요. 즉, pagan culture 와 섞인, 잡스런 날이 12월 25일입니다.
2. 진짜 크리스마스는 언제일까요?
1) 양들의 추억(?)
예수의 탄생과 관련된 부분을 찾아 성경에 보면 "목자들은 밖에서 살며 밤에 자기 양 떼를 지키고 있었다" 라고 기록하고 있습니다. (성경: 누가 복음 2:8) 「예수 시대의 일상생활」(Daily Life in the Time of Jesus)이라는 책에서는 양 떼와 양치기들이 일반적으로 “유월절 전 주[3월 말]”부터 11월 중순까지 야외에서 살았다"고 알려 줍니다. 그런 다음 이렇게 덧붙입니다. 그리고 이것만으로도 전통적인 크리스마스 날짜인 겨울이 옳지 않다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 복음서에서는 양치기 (목자)들이 들에 있었다고 알려 주기 때문입니다.
2) 추운 겨울은 아닙니다
예수께서 태어나시기 얼마 전에 Caesar Augustus 는 일종의 “호적등록제"를 발표했습니다. 태어난 땅으로 돌아가서 등록을 하라는 것이었지요. 이에 따라 모든 사람들은 자신의 고향에 호적등록(?)과 비슷한 것을 해야 했으며, 어느 경우에는 일주일 이상이 소요되었을지도 모른다고 합니다 (성경: 누가복음 2:1-3) 아마도 과세와 징집을 하기 위해 만들어진 그 시행령은 일년 중 식민지 국민들을 이보다 더 이상 자극할 필요는 없었을 듯 합니다. 당시 이스라엘인들 사이에 자신들을 구원할 메시야를 기다리고 있던 당시, 대부분의 식민지 국민들이 며칠간 이동하면서 겪어야 할 이 불필요한 일을 함으로, 그들의 화를 자극할 일은 바보라도 하지 않았겠지요. 즉, 겨울에 이 짓을 하라고 하지는 않았을 것이라는 것이 두번째 이유입니다.
그렇다면 예수께서 세상에 태어나신 날은 언제쯤일까요? 제 개인적 추론과 대부분 학자들의 의견은 11월 중순이지 않을까? 합니다. 즉 이 세상 대부분의 사람은 엉뚱한 날 Christmas 를 지내고 있는 셈이지요.
일단 12월 25일이 대중적으로 받아들여진 크리스마스라 전제하고 노래 하나를 소개해 드립니다:
Simon and Garfunkel 이 1966년 앨범인 "Sage, Rosemary And Thyme" 에 성탄절 찬송가에 66년 당시 헤드라인 뉴스를 더해 세상의 contrasting 한 면을 반영한 "7 O'clock News / Silent Night (저녁 7시 뉴스/고요한 밤, 거룩한 밤)"를 수록했지요. 기존의 찬송곡 가사와 음이 흐르는 뒤로 아래와 같은 저녁 7시 뉴스를 overlap 해 놓은 작품입니다. 예수께서 왜 여기 오셨는지, 그리고 이를 두고 우리 인간들은 대체 뭘 하고 있는지에 대한 slap on the face 같은 메시지를 주고 있지요. 2021년 한국의 크리스마스는 그나마 다행인지, 먼 거리에서 보는 뉴욕의 그것은 어처구니가 없다 못해 더럽습니다. 유럽은 아예 쓰레기처럼 된 지 오래지만요:

Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting
anti-war slogans. Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial increase in the present war effort in Viet nam, the U.S. should look forward to five more years of war.
