00. 1.11 LA 미술관

Norwalk 역에서 기차를 타고 다시 LA 다운타운으로 향한다. 오늘은 LA 미술관을 가봐야겠다. LA 미술관에는 5개의 건물이 있는데 3곳에 미술품이 전시되어 있다. 각 건물은 3층으로 이루어져 있고 하루에 모든 미술품을 보는 것은 무리여서 유럽회화만 골라 보기로 한다. 많이 들어보았던 피카소, 마네, 칸딘스키, 고갱 등의 작품을 직접 본다는 것이 감격에 가깝다.

정말 아무 생각 없이 그림을 감상하고 싶은데 유진 재엽이 떼를 쓴다. 다리가 아프다는 것이다. 기차에서 내려 버스를 타고 이곳까지 걸어왔고 그리고 몇 층씩을 계속 서있으니 다리 아프기도 하겠다. "이놈들아 제발 좀 조용히 있거라." 눈에 힘을 주고 째려본다. 애들은 무슨 재미있는 것을 만들어야 했을 것이다. 이 무료함에서 벗어나려면.


잠시 후 두 아이는 킥킥거리기 시작다. 웃음 폭탄이 터지기 시작한 것이다. 안내원이 다가와 주의를 준다. 두 놈을 데리고 나다. "너희들은 여기 있어라, 엄마 그림 좀 보고 오게." 그림을 감상한 후 다음 방으로 옮기면서 다시 한번 주의를 주고 함께 들어갔다.

환갑은 넘어 보이는 금발 할머니가 관람객에게 조용조용 그림들 설명해 주고 있다. 나도 열심히 듣고 싶었다. 우아해지고 싶었다. 정말 이 분위기에 푸~욱 빠지고 싶었다. 그러나 그림에 몰두하기도 전에 이미 진과 엽은 엄마에게 매달리며 웃음보를 터트린다.

중국계로 보이는 안내원이 오더니 나가 달라고 말한다. 참담하다. 전시실에서 나와 두 놈을 마구 혼낸다. 이제야 사태의 심각성을 깨달았는지 슬그머니 기가 죽는다. 속상하다. 여기서 발길을 돌려야 하다니.... 다른 전시관으로 갔다.

로뎅의 조각품들이 있었고, 현대미술, 사진, 비디오 아트 등이 있다. 미술관을 빠져나와 별관의 전시실로 갔다. 그곳에는 아프리카 민속 악기들이 전시되어 있었고 직접 칠 수 있도록 자리도 만들어 놓았다.

각 코너에는 그 악기를 연주하는 방법을 설명하는 비디오가 틀어져 있다. 별로 사람이 없다. 아이들은 다시 신이 났다. 퉁퉁. 덩덩덩. 짜 그르륵... 이제 돌아가야 한다. 날이 어두워진다. 정말 아쉽게 발길을 돌린다.

Jan. 11th, 2000. LA Art Museum

I took a train at Norwalk and headed for downtown LA. Today, I will go to LA Art Museum. It consists of five buildings. Pictures are displayed in three buildings. Each building has three floors. It will be difficult to see all the works in just one day, so I decided to see only the European pictures. It's impressive to see the world-famous originals of Piccasou, Manet , Kandinsky, Paul Gaugin. I really wanted to take the time to appreciate these works of art, but Yoo Jin and Jae Yup asked to go home. They said their legs ached. I can understand because they walked all the way from the bus stop to here and were on their feet all this time.

"Please guys, stand still, please." I looked at them with stern eyes. Maybe they need to do something interesting to avoid their tedium. After a while they were giggling. They couldn't help laughing. A guide came to me and asked me to keep my children quite. I came out of there with my children. " Stay here, I am going to see the pictures."

After a while, I went into another room and cautioned them to be quite. A blonde woman looking to be in her sixties explained the pictures in a soft voice. I wanted to listen to her. I wanted to be graceful. I really wanted to indulge myself in the moment. But, wouldn't you know it, Yoo Jin and Jae Yup hung on their mommy and laughed out.

A Chinese-American looking guide asked us to leave the room. I was miserable. I taught them a good lesson out side of the gallery. They became quite after that. Maybe they now know what's going on. I was so angry. Do I have to leave here?

I went to another building. There were sculptures of Rodin, contemporary art, pictures, video art, etc. I left the building and went to another building. They displayed African folk musical instruments, and there was a special area to try them. There was a video showing how to play the instruments on each corner. There were a few people. My children got excite again: ttung, ttung, dung dung dung, zzagrrrk.... We must leave here now. It got dark. I unwillingly leave the gallery.
