00. 1.19. 즐거운 비행기 여행
**관광을 통 해 동부 여행을 시작한다. 9시에 한 사람이 pick up 하러 왔는데 나중에 알고 보니 택시를 운전하는 사람이란다. 그 사람이 공항까지 데려다주었고 동부 여행자는 우리 식구가 전부란다. 12시에 LA공항 출발, 4시간 30분 (현지시각 7시 30분)에 Newark공항에 도착했다. 공항 출구를 나서자 50대 아저씨가 ***관광이라고 쓰인 쪽지를 보인다. 그분의 차를 타고 Holiday Inn 호텔에 왔다.
여기가 어디냐고 묻자 NJ(뉴저지)주라고 한다. 뉴웍 공항이 케네디 공항보다 덜 복잡하고 맨해튼 중심지까지는 20분 거리라고 한다. 저녁은 '감나무골'식당에서 된장국을 먹었다. 손님이 그렇게 없냐는 질문에 IMF 이후로 여행사가 부도나면서 빛을 못 받아 빚만 생겼다고 한다. 서부와는 달리 동부는 여행사가 잘 되지 않으며 너무 영세해서 악순환이 계속되고 특히 겨울엔 여행자가 없다고 한다. 내일 워싱턴에서 2 사람이 합류할 것이고 5명이 이번 여행자 전원이란다.
비행기 타고 오면서 본 것인데 California라고 생각된다. 험준한 산맥, 그랜드 케년 같은 협곡이 쫙 펼쳐 저 장관을 이루었다.(망원경 있었으면 좋았을 걸.) 한 시간 정도 지나자 끝없는 평야. (바둑판 모양으로 반듯이 정렬되어 기계농의 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 또 한 시간 가자 산에 하얗게 눈이 쌓였다. 그다음은 하늘이 어두워지기 시작하더니 온통 구름바다. 4시간 30분의 여정이 끝났다. 생각보다 지루하지 않았다. 유진과 재엽은 그냥 비행기에서 자겠다고 한다. 즐거운 비행기 여행.
내일은 워싱턴 여행. 기대된다. 미국은 얼마 되지 않는 역사일망정 매일매일 미국 역사를 가르친다고 한다. 우리가 IMF를 겪는 것은 역사의식이 부족해서 겪는 국난이라고 윤 대머리 아저씨(본인이 그렇게 자신을 소개했다.)는 말한다. 링컨 컨티넨탈 보다 한 단계 위라는 윤 아저씨의 차를 탄다. 차문을 열어준다. 서비스받는 것에 낯선 나. 나보다 어른으로부터 받는 친절. 이거 한국식 아닌데.
엽이는 끊임없이 엄마에게 말한다. 뽀뽀도 못하게 하면서. Sleepless in New Jersy.

I took a trip to Eastern America with XX Tour Company. A man came to my sister's home to pick us up. Later, I found out that he was a taxi driver. He drove my children and me to the LA International Airport, and he said we are all travelling to Eastern America through XX Tour Company.
The plane left LA at 12:00 p.m. and arrived at Newark International Airport after 4 and a half hours. (7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard time.) When I came out of the airport exit, I found a fiftish-looking man standing and holding a card with 'XX Tour' on it. We came to the Holiday Inn riding in his car.
When I asked where we were, he said we were in Newark, New Jersey. He also said that Newark International is less crowded than Kenedy International and it would take 20 minutes to the center of Manhathan from here.
We had bean paste stew for dinner at a Korean restaurant called Kam Na Mu Gol. I asked why there were so few tourists. At my question, he said IMF killed off many travel agencies. That made him unable to collect his debts.
Eastern tour was different form Western tour. Eastern tour was so poor. It was like that everywhere. And winter season, especially, is the worst. He said two more people will be added to our Washington trip tomorrow. He said all the tourist of this trip would be five.
I saw something from the plane and thought it was California. A rugged mountain range and a canyon resembling the Grand Canyon spread out under the plane. (I wish I had a telescope.) After an hour into the flight, there was an endless plain. The fields were arrange like a baduk board, so I can see the effects of mechanized farming of America. Another hour into the flight, all the mountains were covered with snow. Then it got dark and became all clouds.
The flight ended in four and a half hours. It was not as boring as I had expected. Yoo Jin and Jae Yup insisted on sleeping on the plane. It was an enjoyable flight. I anticipate tomorrow's Washington trip. Mr. Yoon, the staff from the travel agency, says Americans teach their history daily, although it's history is not very long. He also said, what we are getting from IMF is due to our lack of awareness of history.
He picked us up and said his car is a model up from Lincoln Continental. He opened the door for me. It was strange for me to receive service from an elderly man. A kindness from an older man-"It is not the traditional Korean way." Jae Yup was chatting continuously while not letting me kiss him. A sleepless New Jersey night.
