작가는 파고 또 판다. 무엇을 찾는 것일까.
Digging Without Seeking
작가는, 파내려 가는 사람이다. 예술가들은 바닥도 안 보이는 땅을 계속 판다. 무엇인가를 찾기 위해 파는 것처럼 보이지만, 그들이 파내려 가는 이유는 '무엇을 찾느냐'가 아니라 '어떻게 파고 있느냐'에 있다.
나도 한때는 고민했다. 어떻게 해야 작가가 될 수 있을까. 유명한 작가, 가치 있는 작가, 돈을 많이 버는 작가. 그 무엇인가를 찾다 보면, 열심히 하는 것 외엔 필요한 게 없어 보인다. 하지만 아무리 열심히 해도, 원하는 결과를 얻지 못하면 지쳐버린다.
결국 중요한 건 ‘무엇을 얻느냐’가 아니라, 그 파내려 가는 행위 자체에 있다. 그 모양과 방식에 의미를 두지 않으면, 이 길을 계속 갈 수 없다. 예술가들은 성과주의의 파도를 겨우겨우 넘으면서도, 자기만의 모양을 지켜내며 파기를 이어간다. 결과를 위한 행동이 아니라, 행동 자체가 삶이 되는 일. 그건 정말 멋진 일이다. 그래서 멈추지 않는 사람만이 자기만의 결을 얻는다.
우리는 행동하는 존재다. ‘나는 누구인가’를 찾기보다, ‘나는 어떻게 하는가’에 집중할 때 비로소 작가라는 정체성이 생겨난다. 작가는 행위에 있다. 결과물이나 타이틀에 있지 않다. 자동차의 목적은 목적지가 아니라 ‘이동’이다. 시동이 걸려 움직이는 차는 이미 완벽하게 기능하고 있는 것이다.
‘나’라는 정체성에 집중할수록, 타이틀에 집중할수록 정작 해야 할 일은 흐려진다. 하지만 행위에 집중하다 보면 나는 자연스럽게, 그 일을 하는 사람으로 자리를 잡게 된다. 정체성은 그렇게, 행동으로 완성된다.
'나는 작가다'가 아니라, '작업하는 나'가 되면 된다. 무엇을 찾아내기 위해 내려가지 마라. 파내려 가는 그 행위 자체가 곧 나다. 땅을 파는 사람에게 땅이 답하고, 예술을 하는 사람에게 예술이 답한다. 우리는 찾는 게 아니라, 만들어지는 존재다.

An Artist Is Someone Who Digs.
Artists keep digging into ground where no bottom is in sight. It may look like they’re digging to find something, but the reason they keep going lies not in what they are searching for, but in how they are digging.
I, too, once struggled with the question: How does one become an artist? A famous artist, a respected artist, a well-paid artist. When you're searching for something like that, it feels like working hard is all that matters. But no matter how hard you try, if the result doesn’t come, you grow tired and worn out.
In the end, what matters is not what you gain, but the act of digging itself. Unless you find meaning in the shape and rhythm of the act, you won’t be able to keep going. Artists barely make it through the crashing waves of performance-driven culture, but they keep digging in their own way, holding onto the form of their process. To act not for the result, but because the action itself becomes life—that is something truly beautiful. Only those who don’t stop eventually find their own grain and texture.
We are beings who act. When we focus less on “Who am I?” and more on “How do I live and work?”, that’s when the identity of an artist begins to take shape. An artist exists in the act—not in the outcome, not in the title. A car’s purpose is not the destination, but movement. Once the engine starts and the car begins to move, it is already functioning perfectly.
The more we fixate on identity—on the name, the title—the more our actual work becomes blurred. But when we stay rooted in the act itself, we naturally become the ones who do the work. Identity is formed through action.
Don’t aim to say, “I am an artist.” Just become the one who works. Don’t dig to find something. The act of digging itself—that is who you are. The earth responds to the one who digs, and art answers the one who creates. We are not meant to search and find—we are meant to be formed.

예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
