예술가, 관광객인가 탐험가인가
Artist, Are You a Tourist or an Explorer
깊은 산속, 끝을 알 수 없는 동굴이 있다. 갑작스러운 폭우를 피해 사람들이 몰려든다. 불빛을 비춰도 앞은 잘 보이지 않는다. 발 한 걸음 앞이 낭떠러지일지, 벽일지 아무도 모른다. 우리의 삶이 그렇다. 1초 후도 알 수 없다. 우리는 미래를 보지 못한다. 미래는 안개에 싸여 있고, 과거는 이미 어둠에 묻혔다. 우리는 모두 그 동굴 한복판에 서 있다.
누군가는 손에 든 불빛으로 벽면을 비추며 말한다. "여기 예쁘네." 어떤 이는 동굴 입구에서 사진을 찍고, "나도 탐험가"라는 글과 함께 사진을 올린다. 그들에게 동굴은 배경일뿐이다. 하지만 어떤 이는 다르다. 이 어둠이 무엇인지, 인간은 왜 여기 있는지, 우리는 어디로 가고 있는지 알고 싶어 미쳐간다. 답 없는 질문에 질식할 것 같지만 멈출 수 없다. 밧줄을 허리에 묶고 절벽으로 뛰어든다. 돌아올 수 없을지도 모르면서.
그렇게 뛰어든 사람들. 그들은 어둠 속에서 길을 만들어냈다. 발로 디디고, 손으로 더듬으며 없던 길을 낸다. 그 길은 뒤에 오는 이들이 따라갈 수 있는 길이 된다. 이름 없던 것에 이름을 붙이고, 보이지 않던 것을 형태로 만든다. 때로는 언어가 되고, 색깔이 되고, 선율이 되어 우리 앞에 놓인다. 예술만이 아니라, 모든 인간의 걸음이 그렇게 어둠 속에서 길을 만들어왔다.
누군가의 절망 어린 뛰어듦 위에, 그들이 용기와 의지로 만들어낸 그 길 위에, 우리는 감탄하고, 그 결과물을 사랑한다. 하지만 그들이 얼마나 고통스러웠는지는 묻지 않는다. 나는 우리가 흔히 ‘예술가’라 부르는 모든 이를 말하는 것이 아니다. 동굴을 그려놓고, 그 앞에서 포즈만 취한 채 자신의 이름만 남기고 떠나는 이들을 말하는 것이 아니다.
미술은 그림이고, 음악은 소리며, 문학은 책이 아니다. 기법도, 재능도, 트렌드도 아니다. 예술은 진리에 닿고 싶어 몸부림치는 인간의 마지막 몸짓이다. 그것을 찾아다닌 이들이 예술가고 그들이 남긴 흔적이 예술이다. 밧줄을 묶고 맨 앞에 선 이들. 그들이 진정한 예술가다. 작가는 생각해 보아야 한다. 나는 관광객인가, 탐험가인가? 그리고 우리는, 바로 그 탐험가들이 걸어간 길 위에 서 있다.

Art x Shift
Deep in the mountains lies a cave with no known end. People rush in to escape a sudden downpour. Even when they shine lights ahead, the path remains barely visible. No one knows whether the next step will lead to a cliff or a wall. Our lives are like that. We cannot know even one second ahead. We cannot see the future. The future is wrapped in fog, and the past is already buried in darkness. We all stand in the heart of that cave.
Some shine the light in their hands on the cave walls and say, "This place is pretty." Some take selfies at the cave entrance, posting photos with captions like, "I'm an explorer too." To them, the cave is just a backdrop. But some are different. They go mad trying to understand what this darkness is, why humans are here, and where we are headed. It feels like suffocating under endless questions, but they cannot stop. They tie ropes around their waists and leap off cliffs, even though they might never return.
Those who leap like that create paths in the darkness. They step with their feet and feel their way with their hands, carving routes where none existed. Those paths become trails for others to follow. They name what had no name and give form to what was unseen. Sometimes it becomes language, sometimes color, sometimes melody, laid out before us. Not only art, but every human step has carved a path through the darkness.
On the path shaped by someone’s desperate leap, carved with nothing but their courage and will, we stand in awe and love what came of it.
But we rarely ask how much they suffered. I’m not speaking of everyone we call an “artist.” Not those who sketch the cave, strike a pose before it, and leave only their name behind.
A painting is not just a picture, music is not just sound, and literature is not just books. Art is not technique, talent, or trends. Art is humanity’s final struggle to touch truth. Those who seek it are artists, and the traces they leave behind are art. The ones who tie ropes around their waists and stand at the very front—those are the true artists. An artist must ask themselves: Am I a tourist, or an explorer? And we now stand on the path carved by those explorers.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다.
아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
