영혼만이 설명할 수 있는 영혼
Only the Soul Can Explain the Soul.
예술은 내면에서 시작되는 탐구다. 그러나 예술가는 자신의 내면을 이루는 요소들을 명확히 구분해야 한다. 감정, 생각, 느낌, 감각은 각각 다른 성질을 지닌다. 떠오르는 생각과 축적된 지식, 거기서 비롯된 지혜. 타인과의 교감에서 생기는 반응, 그리고 알 수 없는 깊은 곳에서 올라오는 감동. 이러한 서로 다른 층위를 단순히 ‘내면’이라는 하나의 범주로 묶어버리면, 예술가는 무엇을 다루고 있는지 모른 채 방향을 잃게 된다.
개인적 감정이나 취향, 순간적인 고독만으로는 깊이 있는 예술에 이르기 어렵다. 그것들은 누구나 경험할 수 있는 보편적 영역이기에, 결국 각자가 자신의 경험 안에만 머물게 만든다. 진정한 예술적 탐구는 내면을 도구 삼아 더 큰 현실을 향하는 일이다. 내면은 실존한다. 인간이 영혼을 가진 존재라는 사실, 그리고 그 영혼의 실존을 구체적으로 드러내는 일이야말로 예술가의 과제다.
내면에는 서로 다른 차원이 존재한다. 하나는 생존과 직결된 기능적 영역이고, 다른 하나는 생존과 무관하지만 인간을 근본적으로 규정하는 영역이다. 무조건적 사랑, 용서, 연민, 신뢰 같은 것들은 기능적 필요를 넘어서는 깊이와 무게를 지니며, 이것이 인간이 영혼을 가진 존재라는 증거가 된다.
예술가는 영혼으로 영혼을 설명하는 사명을 지닌다. 과학자가 과학으로 세상을 설명하듯, 예술가는 예술로 세상을 설명해야 한다. 그 설명의 대상은 반드시 실존하는 세계여야 한다. 영적인 존재를 영적으로 설명하는 것, 이것이 예술가의 책임이다.
그러나 현재 많은 예술은 여전히 표면의 움직임에만 주목한다. 마치 바다에서 일어나는 파도만 보고 그 높이만 측정하면서, 정작 그 파도를 일으키는 깊은 바다의 흐름이나 원리를 외면하는 것과 같다. 예술가는 개인적 감정의 파도가 아니라, 인간이 영혼을 가진 존재라는 실존적 현실을 탐구해야 한다. 정답이 없음을 알면서도, 실존하는 영적인 그 깊은 바다를 끝없이 이해하려고 노력하는 것. 그것이야말로 예술가의 진정한 역할이다.

Art x Shift
Art is an exploration that begins within. Yet an artist must clearly distinguish the elements that make up their inner world. Emotions, thoughts, feelings, and sensations each have a different nature. Passing thoughts and accumulated knowledge, the wisdom that grows from them, the reactions born from connection with others, and the emotions that rise from places we cannot fully understand. If all these distinct layers are simply gathered under the single label of “the inner self,” the artist will lose sight of what they are working with and lose direction.
Personal emotions, preferences, or fleeting loneliness alone cannot lead to deep art. These are experiences anyone can have, and they eventually confine a person within the limits of their own experience. True artistic inquiry uses the inner self as a tool to reach toward a greater reality. The inner self is real. The fact that human beings are souls and possess souls, and the task of revealing the reality of that soul in concrete terms, is the artist’s work.
Within the inner self, there are distinct dimensions. One is directly connected to survival, while the other is unrelated to survival yet fundamentally defines what it means to be human. Unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion, and trust carry a depth and weight that go beyond functional necessity. These are proof that humanity possesses a soul.
An artist has the calling to explain the soul through the soul. Just as a scientist explains the world through science, an artist must explain the world through art. The subject of that explanation must be a reality that truly exists. To explain a spiritual being in spiritual terms is the responsibility of the artist.
Yet much of art still focuses only on what happens at the surface. It is like watching the waves in the ocean and measuring only their height, while ignoring the deeper currents and principles that create them. The artist’s role is not to measure the waves of personal emotion, but to investigate the existential reality that humans are beings with souls. Knowing there is no final answer and still striving without end to understand that vast ocean, this is the true role of the artist.

아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고,
예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
