Who’s Really Living off Others?
"예술하면 밥 빌어먹고 산다".
내가 작가라는 것을 알면서도 큰 소리로, 남의 이야기하듯 던진 말이었다. 예술가는 필요 없는 존재이고, 남에게 기대어 살아간다는 조롱이었다. "밥 빌어먹는다"는 말은 단순히 경제적 어려움을 뜻하지 않았다. 그 말속에는 결국 남에게 피해를 주며 기생한다는 비아냥이 섞여 있었다. 그 말을 던진 손가락에는 큼지막한 보석 반지가 끼워져 있었고, 그 반짝임은 마치 나를 비웃는 듯했다. 아름다움과 상징을 몸에 두른 채, 자신은 빌어먹지 않는다는 당당함이 뿜어져 나왔다.
그 상황 속 반지는 나에게 단순한 장식이 아니었다. 그것은 지위를 드러내고, 성공을 보여주며, 동시에 정체성과 취향을 드러내는 도구였다. 인간은 본능적으로 사물에 의미를 부여하고, 상징을 통해 자신을 표현한다. 그리고 바로 그 상징을 의도적으로 창조하고 다루는 일을 하는 사람들이 예술가다.
우리는 이미 예술이 만든 세계 속에서 살고 있다. 브랜드 로고, 건물 디자인, 음악과 영화, 일상 언어 속의 은유까지. 심지어 "밥 빌어먹는다"는 표현조차 단순한 경제적 설명이 아니라, 구체적인 이미지를 담은 은유적 언어였다. 결국 조롱하는 이조차 자신도 모르게 예술적 언어에 빚지고 있었던 셈이다.
물론 현실은 녹록지 않다. 예술가도 인간이다. 집세를 내야 하고, 밥을 먹어야 하며, 연필 하나도 돈을 주고 사야 한다. 불안정한 구조 속에서 창작과 생계를 동시에 감당해야 한다. 사람들은 말한다. "재능이 있다면 돈이 되지 않겠느냐." 하지만 예술의 가치는 단순히 시장 논리로만 재단되지 않는다. 그것이 시작조차 허락받지 못하게 만드는 이유가 되어서는 안 된다.
결국 아이러니는 여기에 있다. 사람들은 예술이 만들어낸 의미와 상징을 소비하며 살아가고, 의심하고 질문할 순간들을 마주하지만, 정작 그것을 만든 이들을 경제성만으로 판단한다. 그러나 당신의 가치가 통장 잔고에 있지 않듯, 모든 것의 가치는 어떤 기준에 두느냐에 따라 달라진다. 우리는 무엇을 기준으로 가치를 판단하는가. 진정 이 사회에서 예술이, 예술가가 빌어먹고 있다고 생각하는가.

Art x Shift
“Art will get you nowhere. In the end, you just live off others.” The words were thrown out loudly, as if about someone else, even though the speaker knew I was an artist. It was a dismissal, a sneer that artists are unnecessary, that they survive only by leaning on others. “Living off others” was not just about financial hardship. The phrase carried the sting of parasitism, of being a burden. On the finger that delivered those words gleamed a large jewel encrusted ring, its shine mocking me. Draped in beauty and symbols, she radiated the confidence of someone who believed she was above such dependence.
In that moment, the ring was more than an ornament. It was a tool to display status, to signal success, and to express identity and taste. Humans instinctively attach meaning to objects, expressing themselves through symbols. And it is artists who deliberately create and shape those very symbols.
We already live inside a world built by art: brand logos, building designs, music and film, even the metaphors woven into everyday speech. Even the phrase “living off others” was not a plain description of poverty but a metaphor layered with imagery. Ironically, even in her mockery, she relied unknowingly on the language of art.
Of course, reality is harsh. Artists are human too. We pay rent, eat our meals, and buy pencils with money. We struggle within unstable structures, carrying both creation and livelihood at once. People often say, “If you truly have talent, shouldn’t it make you money?” But the value of art cannot be reduced to market logic alone. It should never become a reason to deny artists the chance even to begin.
Here lies the irony. People consume the meanings and symbols created by art, and in them they encounter moments of doubt and questioning. Yet they judge the very people who made them only by economic value. But just as your worth is not found in your bank balance, the value of anything depends on the standard by which it is measured. What standard do we use to judge value? Do we truly believe that in this society it is art, and artists, who are living off others?

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
