예술가, 자유로운가 자유한가?
Feeling Free or Being Free?
사람들은 예술을 쿨하고 자유로운 것으로 생각한다. 광고와 미디어가 보여주는 예술가의 모습, SNS 속 이미지들이 그런 환상을 키운다. 그러나 진짜 자유는 그렇게 얻어지지 않는다. 자유는 끝내 피할 수 없는 질문을 붙잡고, 집요하게 파고드는 데서 시작된다.
자유는 의심과 질문을 끝까지 붙들었을 때 얻어진다. 그것은 어느 순간 깨달음으로 이어지고 확신과 함께 주어진다. 결국 그 질문과 의심에서 자유로울 수 있게 되는 것이다. 자전거를 탈 줄 알 때 자전거에서 자유로울 수 있듯, 자유로움은 표현이 아니라 앎에서 비롯된다.
자유는 무작정 행동하는 데서 나오지 않는다. 길이 어딘지 모르면서 자유를 추구할 수는 없다. 아무 데나 간다고 해서 그것을 자유로운 표현이라 할 수는 없다. 내가 어디 있는지, 무엇을 하는지, 누구인지를 알아갈 때, 그 이해를 통해 자유로운 것이다. 세상을 모른 채 예술이 자유롭다는 것은 말이 되지 않는다. 그래서 예술가는 나보다 큰 신을 알아야 한다. 나를 알기 위해서는 내가 속한 세상을 알아야만 한다.
예술적 표현은 끝없는 반복과 연습, 이해와 시간의 축적에서 나온다. 그것은 순간적인 즉흥이 아니라, 재료와 방법을 얼마나 깊이 이해했는가에 비례한다. 창조적 표현은 한계와 치열하게 씨름하는 과정에서 태어난다. 표현하기 위해서도 재료와 이토록 긴 씨름을 해야 하는데, 인생을 논하는 예술가가 인생이 던지는 질문과 씨름하려 하지 않는다면 예술은 아무것도 담을 수 없다.
예술가의 진정한 자유는 자신이 가치 있다고 믿는 것에 온전히 몰두할 때 얻어진다. 그것은 삶을 향한 이해와 질문, 길이 없어 보이는 곳에 길을 내려는 의지, 그리고 끝없는 물음 속에서 도달하는 확신의 과정이다. 당신이 파낸 만큼, 의심한 만큼, 깨달은 만큼 자유로울 것이다. 그리고 그 자유는 예술을 통해 다른 이들을 자유롭게 할 것이다.

Art x Shift
People often think of art as something cool and free. Media images and social networks reinforce that illusion. But real freedom is not found so easily. It begins with holding on to the questions we cannot escape, and with the persistence to dig deeper rather than look away.
Freedom comes when we dare to stay with our doubts and questions. At some point they lead to understanding, and with that comes conviction. In the end, it is from those very questions and doubts that freedom is born. Just as you can only be free on a bicycle once you know how to ride it, freedom in art does not come from expression alone but from knowledge.
Freedom does not come from acting without direction. You cannot pursue freedom without knowing where the path leads. Wandering aimlessly cannot be called free expression. Freedom comes when you begin to know where you are, what you are doing, and who you are, and through that understanding you become free. To claim that art is free while ignoring the world makes no sense. This is why an artist must know a God greater than themselves. To know who you are, you must first know the world to which you belong.
Artistic expression is born out of endless repetition, practice, understanding, and the accumulation of time. It is not a matter of sudden impulse, but is proportional to how deeply one understands materials and methods. Creative expression emerges from the struggle with limits. Even to express, one must wrestle this long with materials; and if an artist who speaks of life refuses to wrestle with the questions life itself poses, then art can hold nothing at all.
An artist’s true freedom is found in the wholehearted pursuit of what they believe has value.
It is the process of questioning life, of choosing to carve a path where none seems to exist, and of holding on through endless doubt until conviction finally emerges. The deeper you dig, the more you question, the more you come to understand—the freer you become. And that freedom, through art, has the power to set others free.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
