그 눈으로는 볼 수 없다
Those Eyes Cannot See
갤러리나 뮤지엄을 거닐다 보면 작품 앞에서 나누는 대화들이 들린다. “이 작품 가격이 얼마나 될까?” “이게 뭘 의미하는 거지?” 같은 호기심 어린 질문도 있지만, “별거 아닌데 왜 이렇게 비싸?” “이런 것도 예술이야?” 같은 냉소적인 반응도 섞여 있다. 특히 작가가 상주하는 공간에서는 이런 날것의 피드백을 더 자주 듣게 된다. 개인전 오프닝처럼 예의를 차려야 하는 자리에서는 좀처럼 들을 수 없는, 가감 없는 반응들이다.
흥미롭게도 작가에게는 이런 직설적인 피드백이 오히려 더 오래 남는다. 칭찬보다는 비판이, 격려보다는 의문이 더 깊이 파고든다. 물론 모든 비판이 건설적인 것은 아니다. 작품의 가격이나 의미에 대해 진지하게 고민하며 던지는 질문들은 감사하다. 그런 반응을 통해 대중이 예술을 어떻게 바라보는지, 어디에서 멈추는지를 읽을 수 있기 때문이다. 그러나 예술 자체를 부정하거나 작가를 폄하하는 발언은 다른 차원의 문제다.
“꽃 그림인데, 돌인데 왜 비싸?” “색도 몇 개 안 썼네.”
이런 말들을 들으면 말문이 막힌다. 작품을 재료값으로만 환산하는 시선, 그 속에서 작가는 사기꾼처럼 취급되고, 이해하지 못하는 부분은 작가의 무지로 덮어씌워진다. 그런 말들이 가장 오래 남는다. 그리고 결국 작가를 붙들어 세운다. 어떻게 하면 이런 고정관념을 깨뜨릴 수 있을까. 그 근본적인 질문을 던지게 만든다.
예술은 본질적으로 영적인 영역에 속한다. 물론 현실 속에서는 가격과 거래라는 물질적 조건이 얽히기에 혼란이 생긴다. 그 괴리를 이해하지 못하는 것은 아니다. 그러나 작품 앞에서, 예술 앞에서 잠시라도 ‘느끼려는 상태’로 마음을 전환한다면 훨씬 많은 것을 볼 수 있다. 가격이 왜 이래, 별거 없네”라는 육체적이고 계산적인 시선으로는 예술의 진면목을 만날 수 없다. 예술은 그 눈으로 보는 것이 아니다. 인간이 물과 단백질로만 단정될 수 없듯, 예술 또한 재료로만 단정될 수 없다.
음악이 하나의 주제를 소리와 흐름으로 들려준다면, 시각예술은 그것을 압축해 한 순간에 담는다. 예술은 재료에서 시작되지만 재료로 끝나지 않는다. 캔버스와 물감, 색은 시작일 뿐이다. 그 너머에서 작가의 생각과 메시지, 그리고 관객의 감각과 해석이 만날 때 비로소 예술은 완성된다. 보이는 것을 붙잡지 말고, 그 너머를 바라보아야 한다. 그러면 예술이 우리에게 건네려는 진짜 이야기를 들을 수 있게 될 것이다.

Art x Shift
When walking through a gallery or museum, you often overhear conversations in front of the works. Some voices ask with genuine curiosity: “How much does this cost?” “What does it mean?” Others, however, carry cynicism: “Why is this so expensive?” “Is this even art?” Such unfiltered comments appear more often in spaces where the artist is present. They are the kinds of reactions rarely heard at polite openings or private viewings, where etiquette softens people’s words.
Interestingly, it is often these raw responses that linger longest for the artist. Criticism cuts deeper than praise; questions echo longer than compliments. Of course, not all criticism is destructive. Honest questions about price or meaning can be valuable because they reveal how the public encounters art and where their curiosity stops. But remarks that dismiss art itself or belittle the artist are of a different order altogether.
“It is just a flower painting, so it should cost no more than a flower.” “It is a stone, why so expensive?” “Only a few colors, so it cannot be worth much.” Hearing such comments leaves me speechless. They reduce a work to the price of its materials, casting the artist as a fraud, and disguise the viewer’s lack of understanding as the artist’s incompetence. These are the words that stay with me the longest. They force me to ask the fundamental question: How can such narrow assumptions be broken?
Art belongs, at its core, to the spiritual realm. Of course, in reality it becomes entangled with material conditions of price and transaction, and that tension creates confusion. This gap is not beyond understanding. Yet if, even for a moment, one could shift into a state of openness before a work of art, much more would come into view.Through the calculating and material gaze that says, “Why is it so expensive? It looks like nothing special,” the true essence of art cannot be seen. Art is not meant to be looked at with those eyes. Just as a human being cannot be defined only by water and protein, art cannot be defined only by its materials.
If music tells a theme through sound and flow unfolding over time, visual art condenses it into a single moment. Art begins with materials but does not end there. Canvas, pigment, and color are only the beginning. Beyond them, when the artist’s thought and message meet the viewer’s perception and interpretation, art is truly complete. Do not cling to what is visible, but look beyond it. Then the true story that art is trying to offer us will be heard.

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
