제발 열심을 강요하지 말라. 사랑하지 않는데 사랑할 수 없고, 미운데 좋아할 수 없으며, 맛이 없는데 맛있게 먹을 수 없다. 억지로 쌓은 것은 본인 스스로 안다. 성경을 열심히 읽는다고, 교회를 하루도 빠지지 않는다고, 단식을 몇 달씩 한다고 되는 것이 아니다. 이유는 ‘좋아서’가 아니다. 우리는 전해야 하기 때문에 하는 것이다. 그런데 그것을 ‘노력하다 보면 좋아지겠지’라 여긴다면, 그것은 전혀 다른 이야기다. 사랑해서 매일 전화하는 것과 해야 해서 하는 것은 다르다. 진심은 행위가 아니라 중심에 있다.
지구에서 중력을 거스를 수 있는 인간은 없다. 공은 누구 손에서 던져도 땅으로 떨어진다. 은혜도 그렇다. 누구에게나 공평하다. 중력을 믿으려고 애쓰는 사람이 있는가? 믿는 게 아니라 아는 것이다. 은혜도 마찬가지다. 믿음도 애써 키우는 것이 아니라, 제대로 아는 데서 시작된다. "나는 믿음이 약해"라고 말하는 사람들은 믿음을 근육처럼 여긴다. 더 많이 기도하고, 더 자주 나가면 커질 거라 생각한다. 그러나 믿음은 쌓는 것이 아니다. 믿음은 좋은 소식, 즉 복음을 아는 것이다.
당신이 이룬 것도, 앞으로 이룰 것도 없다. 복음은 이미 예수님이 이루신 것이다. 하나님이 결정하신 것이다. 이미 열린 감옥 앞에서 "문이 열리게 해주세요"라고 기도하는 죄수를 상상해 보라. 간수가 "문 열렸어, 나가"라고 말해도, "아니야, 더 간절히 기도해야 해"라고 대답한다면 그것은 신앙이 아니라 무지다. 당신의 어떤 노력도 십자가로 여신 그 문을 열 수도, 닫을 수도 없다. 이미 해방되었는데, 왜 다시 독립운동을 하듯 몸부림치는가.
열심은 결국 탈진을 부른다. 처음엔 뜨겁다가도 지치고, 하기 싫은데 억지로 하다 보면 껍데기만 남는다. 비교가 따라온다. "나는 이만큼 하는데 저 사람은…" 많이 하면 교만해지고, 적게 하면 죄책감이 된다. 열심은 늘 척도를 만들고, 그 척도는 교만과 열등감을 동시에 낳는다. 그 사이에서 정작 필요한 것은 가려진다. 필요한 것은 더 많은 행위가 아니라, 이해와 깨달음이다.
스스로 성취하려는 마음에서 벗어나라. 성취는 노력으로 얻지만, 복음은 이미 주어진 것이다. 예수님이 이루신 것을 왜 당신이 다시 이루려 하는가. 해방된 것을 알았다면, 애써 믿으려 애쓰는 데 삶을 쓰지 말고 이 소식을 전하라. 그것이 기독교인의 유일한 일이다. 이미 이루어진 것을 알라. 그 자유 안에서 흘러나오는 반응으로 살아가라. 그것이 복음이며, 그것이 당신을 자유케 할 것이다.

Art x Shift
Do not force zeal. You cannot love what you do not love. You cannot enjoy what you hate. You cannot savor what has no taste. And when something is forced, the one who forces it knows it inside. Reading the Bible faithfully, never missing church, or fasting for months does not make it true. The reason is not because we enjoy it. We do it because the message must be proclaimed. But if you think, “If I keep trying, maybe I will start to like it,” that is something entirely different. Calling your mother every day out of love is not the same as calling her simply because you feel you must. True sincerity is not in the act itself but in the heart behind it.
No one can escape gravity. No matter who throws the ball, it falls to the ground. Grace is the same, given equally to all. Who tries to believe in gravity? You do not try. You know. So it is with grace. Faith does not begin with straining to grow it stronger. It is not about believing harder, it is about knowing. Many say, “My faith is weak,” as though faith were a muscle. Pray more, read more, attend more, and it will get bigger, that is how they think. But faith is not something you build up. Faith is knowing the good news, the gospel itself.
There is nothing you have achieved, and nothing you will achieve. The gospel has already been accomplished by Jesus. It has already been decided by God. Imagine a prisoner kneeling at the open door of his cell, crying out, “Please, let the door be opened!” The guard says, “The door is already open. Walk out.” But the prisoner insists, “No, I must pray harder, cry harder, plead longer.” That is not faith, that is ignorance. Your effort cannot shut what the cross has opened, nor open what it has already finished. You are already free. Why keep fighting as if you were still enslaved?
Zeal will wear you down. At first you burn with passion, then you grow weary. You push yourself to do what you no longer want, until only the shell of form remains. And with zeal comes comparison: “I do this much, but what about them?” If you do more, pride swells. If you do less, guilt consumes. Zeal creates a measure, and that measure breeds both arrogance and inferiority. All the while, the real issue is hidden: what we need is not more doing but true understanding.
So let go of the drive to achieve. Achievements come by effort, but the gospel is already given. Why do you try to accomplish what Christ has already accomplished? If you know you are free, then stop exhausting yourself trying to believe harder. Simply proclaim it. That is the only calling of a Christian. Know what has already been done. And in that freedom, live out the natural response that flows from it. That is the gospel. And that is what will set you free.

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
