예술가, 망설여지는 타이틀
Artist, a Title We Hesitate to Claim
예술은 누구나 할 수 있다. 그러나 예술가로 만들어져 가는 과정은 전혀 다른 이야기다. 처음부터 예술가로 태어나는 사람은 없지만, 꾸준히 이어가는 행위와 그 안에서 쌓여가는 경험과 목소리가 한 사람을 예술가로 빚어낸다. 요리를 누구나 하지만 요리사가 되는 것은 다른 문제이고, 피아노를 누구나 칠 수 있지만 피아니스트가 되는 것은 또 다른 문제다. 중요한 것은 타이틀이 아니라, 그 행위에 무엇이 담겼느냐는 것이다.
우리는 '예술', '예술가', '작가'라는 단어에 지나치게 많은 의미를 덧씌운다. 마치 그 안에 어떤 특별한 자격이나 권위가 숨어 있는 것처럼 말이다. 어떤 이는 "나는 감히 나를 작가라 부르지 못한다"라며 스스로를 낮추고, 어떤 이는 "드디어 누군가 나를 예술가라 불러줬다"라며 그 단어를 하나의 승인처럼 여긴다. 하지만 그 단어는 훈장도 아니고, 누군가에게 받아야 하는 인증서도 아니다. 그것은 단지 자신이 하는 일을 설명하는 도구일 뿐이다.
학교에서 아이들을 가르치는 사람을 선생님이라 부르고, 음식을 만드는 사람을 요리사라 부른다. 그렇듯 예술이라는 영역에서 목소리를 내고 있다면 예술가라 부를 수 있다. 예술가라고 불리기 위해 몇 단계 더 필요한 것도 아니고, 정의를 남이 내려주어야 하는 것도 아니다. 내면에서 일어나는 일들을 담아내고, 하고 싶은 말이나 해야만 하는 이야기를 예술이라는 그릇에 담아 세상에 내어놓고 있다면, 그는 예술을 하는 사람, 곧 예술가다.
그 담는 방식은 다양하다. 그것은 소리일 수도 있고, 눈에 보이는 형상일 수도 있으며, 단어와 문장이나 몸짓일 수도 있다. 때로는 이 모든 것을 동원해 종합적으로 표현하기도 한다. 중요한 것은 그릇이 아니라, 그 안에 무엇을 담고 있느냐이다. 예술은 결국 인간이라는 공통점을 안고, 내면의 언어를 세상에 건네는 일이다.
그러니 그 단어 앞에서 주저하지도, 위축될 필요도 없다. 예술가라는 타이틀은 심각하거나 대단한 것이 아니다. 중요한 것은 단어가 아니라, 그 안에 담긴 진실과 전하려는 목소리다. 그 목소리를 끝까지 이어가려는 마음, 바로 그 과정 속에서 예술가는 예술을 만들어가고, 예술은 예술가를 만들어간다.

Art x Shift
Art is something anyone can do. Yet when it comes to being called an artist, many hesitate. The word feels heavy, as if it demands special qualifications or authority. No one is born an artist. It is the persistence of making, the layering of experiences, and the shaping of one’s voice that gradually form an artist. Anyone can cook, but not everyone becomes a chef. Anyone can play the piano, but not everyone becomes a pianist. What matters is not the title itself, but what is carried within the work.
We often load too much meaning onto the words art, artist, and author, as if the labels themselves carried a kind of mystical approval. Some lower themselves saying, “I dare not call myself a writer.” Others celebrate when someone finally names them an artist, as if the word itself were a stamp of legitimacy. Yet the word is not a medal, nor a certificate handed down by others. It is nothing more, and nothing less, than a tool to describe what one does.
We call the one who teaches a teacher, and the one who cooks a cook. In the same way, one who speaks through the language of art can be called an artist. To be named so does not require passing extra steps or waiting for someone else’s definition. If one is drawing from the inner life, placing what must be said into the vessel of art and offering it to the world, that person is doing art — and is, by that very act, an artist.
The forms this takes are countless. It can be sound, image, words, gestures — or even all of these combined. The form itself is not what matters, but what is carried within it. Art, at its core, is the act of taking the shared weight of being human, shaping it within, and handing it to others.
So there is no need to shrink before the word artist. The title itself is simple, but what it points to is not. To make art is not a single act, but a process that flows with life. In that process, the artist makes the art, and the art makes the artist.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
