사람은 커피 한 잔에도 자신을 담는다.

커피 한 잔을 테이블 위에 올려놓았다. 단순해 보이는 그 한 장면 안에는 수많은 것들이 응축되어 있다. 시간적 여유, 공간의 분위기, 취향의 표현, 함께 혹은 홀로의 선택. 그 작은 순간에는 한 사람의 존재 방식이 고스란히 드러난다. 우리는 이렇게 평범해 보이는 순간 속에서도 끊임없이 자신을 표현하고, 결핍을 채우며, 타인의 시선을 통해 존재를 확인한다.
그렇게 쌓인 이미지들 속에서 대화를 나누고, 시간을 보내고, 관계가 자라난다. 그 강은 하루아침에 흐르지 않는다. 함께 먹은 음식, 나눈 말, 함께 본 것들이 쌓여 만들어진다. 한 사람은 그렇게 수많은 강을 지니고, 지금 여기 앉아 있다. 그 강을 따라가다 보면 결국 사람을 이해하는 일이 얼마나 깊고도 어려운 일인지 알게 된다. 가방에 달린 키링 하나에도 이유와 이야기가 있고, 자주 쓰는 단어 속에도 마음이 배어 있기 때문이다. 보이지 않는 것들은 늘 보이는 것으로 새어 나온다.
많은 이들이 말한다. “예술이 어렵다. 미술관에 가면 잘 모르겠다.” 그 이유는 사람이 어렵기 때문이다. 예술의 재료는 결국 사람이고 삶이다. 한 사람 안에는 기억이란 깊은 강이 흐른다. 그것은 말이 되고, 눈빛이 되고, 몸짓과 표정으로 드러난다. 무한한 내면이 유한한 몸을 통해 드러나는 순간이다. 그때 보이지 않던 것이 보이고, 들리지 않던 것이 들린다. 예술은 바로 그 일을 한다. 각자가 이미 품고 있던 것을 끌어내어 서로 발견하게 만든다. 그래서 자기애나 자기 과시만으로는 곧 바닥이 드러난다. 타인 안의 것을 깨울 힘이 없기 때문이다.
예술은 단지 직접 만드는 것만이 아니다. 고르는 것, 선택하는 것도 창조다. 우리는 옷을 고르고, 공간을 고르고, 단어를 고른다. 수많은 것들 중 무엇을 취하고 버릴지 결정하는 과정 속에서 자신을 알아간다. 무엇을 좋아하는지. 무엇에 끌리는지. 나는 누구인지. 나는 그 안에서 신을 본다. 만든 이가 만들어진 것에게 다시 만들 능력을 주셨다는 사실. 그렇게 선택하고 모아서 자신의 삶을, 자신을 창조해 간다. 그 구조 자체에서 깊은 사랑을 느낀다.
사람을 가만히 바라보고 있으면, 그 안의 무한함이 느껴진다. 살아 있다는 것은 곧 자유를 가진다는 것이고, 자유는 새로운 선택을 가능하게 한다. 그 선택들은 아직 비어 있는 캔버스 위에 펼쳐질 무한한 창조의 가능성이다. 나는 그 자유가 인간을 인간답게 한다고 생각한다. 예술은 멀리 있지 않다. 우리는 이미 매일 창조적 행위 안에 있다. 바라보는 눈빛에 마음을 담고, 건넬 단어를 고르며, 서로의 강을 바라본다. 삶은 곧 예술이다.

Art x Shift
A cup of coffee was placed on the table. In that seemingly simple scene, countless things are condensed. A sense of leisure, the atmosphere of a space, an expression of taste, the choice to be with someone or to be alone. In that small moment, the way a person exists is quietly revealed. Even in such ordinary moments, we are constantly expressing ourselves, filling our emptiness, and confirming our existence through the gaze of others.
In these accumulated images, we converse, spend time together, and relationships take root. Such a river does not flow overnight. Shared meals, spoken words, and moments experienced together all gather to form it. A person carries many such rivers and sits here now. Following those currents, one comes to realize how deep and difficult it is to truly understand another. Even a keychain hanging from a bag has its reasons and stories, and familiar words carry hidden weight. The unseen always seeps out through the visible.
Many say, “Art is difficult. I don’t understand it when I go to a museum.” The reason is that people are difficult to understand. The material of art is ultimately the human being and life itself. Within each person flows a deep river of memory. It becomes words, it becomes a gaze, it is revealed in gestures and expressions. When the infinite inner self is conveyed through the finite body, the unseen becomes visible and the unheard becomes audible. That is what art does: it draws out what is already within us and allows us to discover it in one another. This is why self-love or self-display alone is soon exhausted—it lacks the power to awaken what lies within others.
Art is not only about making directly with one’s hands. Choosing is also a form of creation. We choose clothes, we choose spaces, we choose words. Among countless possibilities, we decide what to embrace and what to leave behind, and in that process, we come to know ourselves. What we love. What draws us. Who we are. In this, I see God: the Creator has given the created the ability to create again. In this way we gather, select, and shape our lives, shaping ourselves along the way. In this very structure I sense a profound love.
When we quietly look at a person, the infinity within them can be felt. To be alive is to have freedom, and freedom makes new choices possible. Those choices are an unpainted canvas, an open field of infinite creation. I believe that this freedom is what makes us truly human. Art is not far away. We are already living within creative acts every day. We place our hearts in our gaze, choose the words we will speak, and behold each other’s rivers. Life itself is art.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
