편하면 행복할까
Does Comfort Mean Happiness?
세상은 끊임없이 편안함을 판다. 그 일에 얼마나 열심인지 모른다. 더 빠르게, 더 넓게, 더 편하게. 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 불편함을 찾아낸다. 가난을 가리고, 무지를 가리고, 악함을 가리고, 게으름을 가리고, 슬픔과 결핍까지도 가릴 수 있는 모든 것을 만들어낸다. 그렇게 우리는 조금씩 설득당하고, 결국 이런 가리개들이 절실히 필요하다고 믿게 된다.
편안함이 늘어날수록 결핍은 가려질 뿐 채워지지 않는다. 세상은 앞으로도 더 살기 좋아질 것이고, 놀라울 만큼 편안해질 것이다. 그러나 불편함은 더 큰 편안함을 요구하고, 그 기준은 끝없이 높아질 것이다. 결국 우리는 새로운 불편함을 만들고, 새로운 결핍을 경험하게 될 것이다.
행복과 만족감은 편안함에 있지 않다. 그러나 우리는 불편하면 불행하다고 느끼기에, 편하면 행복할 거라 착각한다. 세상은 끊임없이 우리를 설득한다. 육체적 편안함이 전부인 듯, 몸이 편할 수 있는 모든 것을 자동화한다. 한쪽의 소리가 유독 크기에 우리는 그 흐름을 자연스레 당연하게 여긴다.
그러나 지금보다 불편했던 시절에도 행복한 순간들은 충분히 있었다. 편안해지며 잃어버린 것들, 그 속에는 우리가 스스로 빼앗긴 추억도 많지 않은가. 이제는 내면의 소리를 다시 키워야 한다. 예술은 편안함을 팔지 않는다. 오히려 불편함을 마주하게 하고, 그 안에서 의미를 찾게 한다. 생각하게 하고, 멈추게 하고, 느끼게 한다. 편안함이 아닌 곳에서 발견되는 것들, 효율로는 측정할 수 없는 가치들을 이야기하는 것, 그것이 예술이 할 수 있는 일이다.
세상이 육체의 편안함을 추구하며 너무 많은 것을 희생시켜 왔다. 예술은 그 과정에서 밀려난 것들을 기억하고 말할 수 있다. 더 깊이 보고, 더 많이 느낄 수 있다. 불편함은 언제나 존재할 것이다. 그것은 상대적이기에 사라지지 않는다. 진짜 행복은 불편하지 않은 상태가 아니다. 불편함 속에서도 진실을 마주할 수 있는 힘, 결핍을 회피하지 않고 받아들이는 용기에서 온다. 그 용기가 우리를 진실에 가까이 이끈다.

Art x Shift
The world never stops selling comfort. It works tirelessly for it. Faster, wider, easier. It finds discomfort by any means and covers it up. It hides poverty, ignorance, evil, laziness, sorrow, and even emptiness itself. Little by little, we are persuaded to believe that all these coverings are necessary.
As comfort increases, emptiness is only hidden, never filled. The world will become an even better place to live, astonishingly comfortable. Yet discomfort will demand greater comfort, and its standard will rise without end. In the end, we will create new discomforts and experience new forms of emptiness.
Happiness and contentment do not lie in comfort. But because we feel unhappy when uncomfortable, we assume we will be happy when comforted. The world keeps convincing us of this illusion. It automates everything that can ease the body, as if physical comfort were all that matters. The louder voice always wins, and we come to accept its flow as natural.
Even in the past, when life was far less comfortable, there were many moments of happiness. As comfort grew, we lost much along the way, memories, struggles, traces of what made us alive. It is time to turn up the voice within again. Art does not sell comfort. It makes us face discomfort and find meaning within it. It makes us think, pause, and feel. It speaks of what is found beyond comfort, of values that cannot be measured by efficiency. That is what art can do.
In pursuit of physical comfort, the world has sacrificed too much. Art remembers what was pushed aside and gives it a voice. It allows us to see deeper and feel more. Discomfort will always exist, for it is relative and cannot be erased. True happiness is not the absence of discomfort. It is the strength to face truth within it, the courage to accept lack without turning away. That courage is what leads us closer to what is real.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
