완성이 아닌 발견
Not Completion, but Discovery
머릿속 이미지는 현실이 되지 않는다. 아무리 선명해도 막상 만들면 전혀 다르다. 시작은 늘 실망스럽다. 하지만 그 어색한 무엇이라도 눈앞에 놓여야 비로소 창작이 시작된다. 나에게 창작은 만드는 일이 아니라 수정하는 일에 가깝다.
어긋난 것을 맞추고, 다듬고, 더하고, 빼본다. 불필요한 것을 덜어내고 균형을 잡는다. 처음 생각했던 이미지에 맞추려 하지만, 결과는 언제나 예상을 빗나간다. 그 다름 속에서 오히려 새로운 영감이 찾아온다. 창의성은 해결해야 하는 벽 앞에서 발동된다.
색도 마찬가지다. 색은 끝없이 나뉘고, 선택은 언제나 어렵다. 그래서 고르기보다 버린다. 아닌 건 금방 보인다. 딱 맞는 옷을 찾기 위해 여러 번 갈아입듯, 그렇게 버리고 나면 하나가 남는다. 그 하나는 내가 선택한 색이 아니라, 남을 수밖에 없던 색이다.
가장 어려운 건 언제 멈출지를 아는 일이다. 아직 더 감춰진 게 있을까, 이미 다 드러났을까. 그 경계에서 늘 머뭇거린다. 조금만 더 하면 나아질 것 같지만, 긴장이 풀리면 생명이 흐려진다. 작품을 멈추는 일, 그게 가장 어렵다.
손을 떼기로 결정하고도 미련은 남는다. 하지만 계속 바라보다 보면 문득, 무언가 이미 거기 있었다는 걸 느낀다. 창작은 완성되는 게 아니라 멈춘 것이고, 만든 게 아니라 발견한 것이다. 그 사실을 인정하는 순간, 작품은 작가의 손을 떠난다.

Art x Shift
The image in my mind never becomes reality. No matter how clear it seems, once I make it, it turns out completely different. The beginning is always disappointing. But even that awkward something must take shape before creation can begin. To me, creation is less about making and more about revising.
I align what feels off, refine, add, and take away. I remove what is unnecessary and try to find balance. I try to match the image I first imagined, but the result always strays from what I expected. Yet within that difference, new inspiration appears. Creativity begins when I face something that resists resolution.
It’s the same with color. Color divides endlessly, and choosing one is never easy. So instead of selecting, I remove. It’s easy to see what doesn’t belong. Like trying on many clothes to find the one that fits, after enough attempts, one remains. It’s not the color I chose, but the one that had to stay.
The hardest part of creation is knowing when to stop. Is there still something hidden, or has everything already been revealed? I hesitate in that boundary. It feels like one more touch might make it better, but when the tension fades, the life within disappears. Stopping a work—that is always the hardest part.
Even after I decide to step away, some regret remains. But as I keep looking, I realize something was already there. Creation is not something completed but something paused, not something made but something discovered. The moment I accept that, the work leaves the artist’s hands.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
